We are delighted to be advertising this exciting and rewarding role in Acute Medicine to complement our existing provision. Key Responsibilities

Work as part of the Acute SLT team, primarily leading the acute medical wards including the admissions areas.
Provide regular communication and swallowing assessment and therapy to patients with complex needs.
Continually represent the SLT service within acute and general medicine.
Be innovative in your approach to patient care and service delivery, whilst being part of MDT service initiatives.
Support patients to have an instrumental assessment of their swallowing.
Offer training and support to less experienced SLTs and other staff.
Support the SLT team in leading or taking on non-clinical tasks e.g. student coordination, clinical effectiveness, catering link role.

**If you are**:
Experienced in working with patients with complex communication and swallowing difficulties.
Skilled in using instrumental assessments e.g. FEES and/or VF,
Experienced in supervising and educating others.
Experienced in representing SLT in an MDT setting, and effectively advocating for patients’ needs.
Experienced in working in an acute hospital, and planning, delivering and evaluating clinical audits, service evaluations and/or research.

The Department of Dietetics and Speech and Language Therapy employs approximately 130 staff, with clinical experts working across a range of specialities, providing acute services in both adults and paediatrics. As a tertiary hospital, we have senior SLTs in a wide range of specialist areas. There is access to regular CPD sessions, and opportunities to engage in service development and research.

General Duties

Provide a highly specialist, high-quality, evidence-based, effective speech and language therapy service within defined clinical areas.
Attend ward rounds/multidisciplinary meetings/case conferences to provide expert advice to multidisciplinary teams regarding the provision of appropriate communication, eating, drinking and/or swallowing expertise integrating assessment, assisting diagnosis and influencing treatment decisions for patients and carers.
Independently formulate, deliver, monitor and adjust accordingly, individualised communication, eating, drinking and swallowing treatment plans, recognising limitations of treatment options, and when to refer to other disciplines or to seek expert advice.
Make clinical judgements and decisions based on individual assessments, clinical condition and other parameters including the environment, and select and evaluate appropriate treatment plans including recommending appropriate communication strategies and diet texture modification products.
Provide complex communication, eating, drinking and swallowing counselling to patients/carers offering appropriate advice and reassurance.
Effectively negotiate and communicate speech and language therapy goals with patients/carers.
Communicate and liaise with multidisciplinary teams to ensure patients’ communication, eating, drinking and swallowing needs are being met and patients can actively engage in their care.
Where necessary, provide information and education to clinicians, patients, and carers.
