To take a lead role in the assessment and treatment of service users referred to the Podiatry and Orthotics department who may have complex and / or chronic presentation.

To work as part of the diabetes foot ulcer team.

Guided by broad operational policies, to assess, diagnose, develop and implement individual programmes of care for your own caseload of service users, who will present with a wide range of clinical needs.

To assist the Head of Podiatry and Orthotics Services, advising on and actioning the procurement of medical and surgical equipment as required within the Department. You will be assisting the Head of Podiatry and Orthotics Services with operational and administrative functions, statistical analysis and quality initiatives.

You will work as an autonomous practitioner, being professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of your own work including management of all service users in your care.

To make appropriate judgements on and be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation of Orthotic care of your patient caseload. To relieve pain, maintain tissue viability and assist in maintaining mobility and independence of service users with complex medical and clinical needs including:

- Diabetes
- Chronic neuropathy / neuromuscular
- Chronic disease
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Vascular insufficiency
- Terminally ill service users

Care will be provided in a range of primary and secondary care settings, the majority of which will be in isolation, without the support of Orthotist colleagues, working as a single handed practitioner. Supervision will be largely self driven through attendance at departmental briefings and supervision meetings and through seeking the advice of peers.

To be responsible for the assessment of new service users including vascular, muscular, articular and neurological status with the subsequent production of individual care packages and provision of the appropriate education advice to individuals and groups of service users.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

To have highly developed physical skills, demonstrating dexterity and precision hand/eye co-ordination for prolonged periods, including casting, fitting and alignment techniques.

To display theoretical knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology in the provision of specialist care and advice often in situations where conflicting evidence is present or some information is unavailable. To demonstrate the ability to use the decision making process to interpret and analyse clinical and non-clinical facts to form accurate diagnoses in a wide range of complex conditions guided by clearly defined principles or occupational policies within the HCPC Code of Conduct for Orthotists. To identify when service users require the intervention of other professional and departmental specialist services by following agreed departmental referral pathways. To coordinate interventions and make appropriate referrals to other primary care providers doctors, OTs, physiotherapists, carers and others within and outwith the health board, maintaining appropriate working relationships.
