Job summary

The Intellectual Property Office (IPO) plays a key role in ensuring we capture the value of innovation through the UK’s Intellectual Property (IP) framework. The UK IP framework is the legal mechanism for the protection and commercialisation of innovation, supporting the transformation of ideas into intangible business assets.

The IPO is responsible for maintaining our world leading IP environment by contributing to the policy framework for IP, increasing the impact of IP through awareness and education, and making sure that everyone including researchers and businesses have the tools they need to navigate the IP system.

The IPO has a commitment to increase the impact of IP for the benefit of the UK economy and society through awareness and education across the whole UK innovation ecosystem, from primary schools to university researchers, businesses, and government. This will enable them to derive the greatest social and economic impact through better identification, management, protection, and commercialisation of IP.

You will be part of a community of professionals at the heart of government who help to shape the UK’s future direction and improve people’s lives.
You will be working in the Knowledge Exchange and Education Policy team. The work is complex, technical and involves diverse stakeholder groups. The delivery schedule is ambitious and will be delivered at pace.
You will work to increase IP’s impact through policy for research and innovation, supporting organisations to strategically manage IP assets.
You will collaborate with a diverse set of stakeholders within the IPO, across the UK government and with external stakeholders.
You will work with others in the IPO to ensure that effective analytics and metrics are gathered to support evidenced-based policy.

Working location

This role will be carried out in-line with IPO Hybrid working arrangements where staff are currently expected to attend the office 1 day per week, or equivalent if part-time, on-site at our Newport office.

Job description

**The main areas of responsibility include**:
Develop good practice guidance on IP management in universities, and research collaboration and commercialisation
Develop IP policies to support innovation ensuring that the IPO positively engages with other government departments as well as across the innovation ecosystem.
Contribute to cross-team work to deliver the IPO’s policy agenda to support innovation and entrepreneurship, improve understanding how to identify, manage, protect and use IP, and positively impact Levelling Up the UK.
Gather evidence through research and analysis of different perspectives, facts and data and use judgement to draw out key issues, to form sound decisions and creative solutions to address challenges.
Draft clear, concise, evidence-based briefings, submissions and other policy papers for senior managers and Ministers.
Build and maintain positive relationships with a range of government and external research and innovation facing stakeholders.
Adapt quickly and proactively to a fast-changing environment and show high levels of resilience. This includes the willingness to be redeployed in other roles, taking on new challenges as the organisation’s goals evolve.
