University of Warwick, United Kingdom University of Warwick Full time

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research fellow to work under the supervision of Dr Elizabeth Fullam, in collaboration with Professor Matthew Gibson (Department of Chemistry) and Dr Rob Young (Blue Burgundy Drug Discovery Consulting) on a project which involves the design, synthesis and development of new molecules for the treatment of tuberculosis (TB), one of the leading causes of death from a single infectious disease in the world. In this project, the focus will be on organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry. We will evaluate these new inhibitors using biophysical assays and against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and mammalian cell lines. The project is funded by the Warwick-Wellcome Translational Partnership and is available immediately.

Applicants should possess, or expect to shortly obtain, a PhD and have a proven track record in organic/medicinal chemistry with extensive experience of the design and synthesis of small molecules. You will have experience in synthetic chemistry and organic chemistry and demonstrate competence and proficiency in this area. You should be able to adapt existing synthetic techniques and establish new strategies and methodologies. An understanding of inhibitor optimisation and determining structure-activity relationships of small molecules would be beneficial. You should be capable of working under your own initiative but also collaboratively with researchers from a range of different disciplines, so excellent communication, organisational and team skills are required.

If you have not yet been awarded your PhD but are near submission or have recently submitted your PhD, any offers of employment will be made as Research Assistant on level 5 of the University grade structure (£30,497). Upon successful award of your PhD and evidence of this fact, you will be promoted to Research Fellow on the first point of level 6 of the University grade structure (£31,406 pa).

**JOB PURPOSE**

This research position will investigate whether it is possible to hijack Mycobacterium tuberculosis nutrient transporters. The goal will be to design, synthesise and evaluate new inhibitors against Mtb.

In addition, the role will involve assisting the project leader to support the work of the department and develop and enhance its reputation, both internally and externally. Where appropriate, the role will involve working with project collaborators to ensure the successful execution of the project, and the dissemination of project results.

**DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES**

**Research**
- Help establish a sound research base within the department in order to assist the development of research objectives and proposals for own or joint research.
- Conduct individual and collaborative research projects within the conditions of the contract.
- To publish research outcomes in appropriate journals of international standing and to publish and disseminate the result of research to other reputable outlets.
- May present information on research progress and outcomes to bodies supervising research, e.g. steering groups.
- Analyse data and present results in an appropriate format (oral, written) in a language appropriate for the audience, which may include the project leads, lab members, departmental and external colleagues, funders and the general public.
- May contribute to the preparation of papers for steering groups and other bodies.
- Communicate complex information (orally and in writing) and material of a specialist or highly technical nature.
- Continually update own knowledge and understanding in field or specialism.
- To work within the requirements of the Research Governance policies of the University.
- To stay current with scientific literature in the research field.
- To work within budget restraints.
- To design, synthesise and evaluate new molecules for activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

**Teaching and Learning Support**
- Assist in the supervision of student projects and the development of student research skills.
- May be involved in the assessment of student knowledge and supervision of projects.

**Administration and other activities**
- May be required to attend departmental meetings and to participate (where necessary) in other committees and working groups within the department, the faculty and the University.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety in all aspects of work.
- To engage in professional development activities.
- To participate in relevant professional activities.
- Work within budget constraints.
- Management of the project on a day to day basis, including managing equipment and purchasing consumables and maintenance issues. Monitoring progress and advising the PI of any issues that are likely to lead to a delay in the project.
- Assist with communication of the group’s research in outreach activities or the wider community.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety in all aspects of work, and when appropriate undertake risk assessments.
