Documentary Researcher

Bristol, United Kingdom TinyTrax Full time

We are looking for keen, self-motivated, enthusiastic individuals who have an interest in documentary filmmaking and would like to help us tell an important story about disabled children in the UK. We need researchers and potentially interviewers, who are willing to look at various aspects of the children's mobility sector and build up a clear picture of how it works. This is a short-term, flexible project that would suit people wanting to gain some experience, or put to practical use, the knowledge they have (photography/filming/sound/editing/graphics) to help with the project. This role will be paid when working at our premises, but will involve additional work (on a voluntary basis) that can be done at home.

All this research will feed into the making of a short documentary about the disabled children's sector in the UK. We are hoping to conduct a series of interviews with key individuals who head up various parts of the sector including the NHS wheelchair services, charities that operate in the sector as well as professionals such as Occupational Therapists and Physios.

The concept is to gain an insight into what brought them into the sector, what they want to achieve, what motivates them, and some of the challenges they face. Most importantly, we also want to find out the experiences of the families and children who engage with the sector in order to access their care. Finding what their challenges have been, and what works, as well as what doess't work and they feel improvements could be made.

From all this information we will be able to clearly show how the sector works, and provide a useful guide to parents new to it, so they can navigate it in order to get the best outcome for their child.

There are issues that are threatening the future of our wheelchairs, and the ability we have to continue to help children. One major issue is that the wheelchair service in Bristol refuses to tell families that our chair exists, so many of them simply don't find out about it. We've had volunteers with OBE's try to help change their policy, and we've cited the guidance in the NHS England website (that is legally valid and protects the rights of disabled people) that states they should tell families. The current situation is causing lots of families to miss out, as its not just happening in Bristol unfortunately. The second issue is a £16k backdated business rates bill that has been spring on us from the council. We believe there has been an error, and also cited the fact that a major car manufacturer in North Bristol won a case to not have backdated rates, but the council thinks this is not relevant. They are taking us to court over it. We simply can't go back to charities who funded our chairs and ask for the extra funds due to a backdated bill. The council are duty bound to issue bills in good time allowing organisations to factor those costs in within their financial year. Backdating 2 years simply makes a mockery of this.We would like to continue our invaluable work, and children in Bristol who benefit from our TinyTrax would be happy to lend their voice if you can help? We need advice and support to break through these issues. Many thanks
