The Departments are UKAS accredited and serve a population of around 410,000. They provide a full range of analytical services to the Wolverhampton and Cannock patients and process in excess of 1 million samples per year. The laboratories are well equipped and are housed in a new state of the art building.

After training they will provide a number of different support roles such as receipt and booking-in of urgent samples, reporting and undertake basic laboratory procedures providing support to Biomedical Scientists processing diagnostic specimens. Concentration and attention to detail are essential to these processes.

The post holders will be expected to work flexibly over an extended working day and at weekends

The post holder is expected to work as part of a team in a designated section of the Clinical Chemistry Laboratory. After training they will be required to provide a number of different support roles such as receipt and booking-in of samples, reporting, sending of referred samples, and undertake basic laboratory procedures providing support to the Biomedical Scientists processing diagnostic specimens. Concentration and attention to detail are essential to these processes. The post holder will offer a helpful and professional service to all visitors and telephone callers and will assist the laboratory in the provision of a high quality service.

The post holder will be expected to work flexibly over an extended working day (includes some weekend shifts)

Assist in processing routine diagnostic specimens, including sample verification,

Manage samples, reports and workflow, to include;
Sample sorting

Sample centrifugation

Preparation and checking of worklists

Preparation of samples (aliquots/labelling/storage)

Recording referral samples

Packaging and transport arrangements

Reporting referred results

Review outstanding worklists

Interrogate host computer to solve problems

Liaise with external laboratories to ensure smooth delivery of results and samples

Communicate authorised patient’s results accurately.

Use necessary judgement and refer any inconsistencies to supervisors e.g. HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists.

Record keeping e.g. equipment maintenance.

Cleaning and disinfection of laboratory materials and equipment.

Replenishing stocks of laboratory consumables and preparation and loading of reagents.

Safe disposal of laboratory waste.

To accept and unload deliveries from suppliers.

Plan and organise his/her daily work activities.

Supervised operation of instrumentation including basic maintenance, QC checks and loading and unloading.

Once trained perform simple laboratory tests and input results into laboratory computer.

Receipt of Blood products from external agencies.
