**Job Role**: Healthcare ScientistAssistant

The post holder will work as an integral member of the laboratory team to support and assist Biomedical Scientists in providing a professional, high-quality service to users and clients.

Under supervision and working to standard operating procedures they will undertake a variety of tasks that will contribute to the pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical work of the laboratory. On appointment, staff will be assigned to either Specimen Reception or Haematology and duties will vary depending on work area.

**Location** - Belfast

**Hours of Work** - 37.5 Hours per week (Monday to Friday) Post holder will be required to participate in a 24/7 service which may include extended working over days, nights, weekends, and public holidays

**Salary** - £11.11 Per hour

**What the role entails**:
To support all three laboratory disciplines by providing samples, prepared and ready for analysis supplied according to clinical need.

Assist in the routine operation and development of the laboratory specimen reception according to changing needs

Prioritise and manage own work Following laboratory Standard Operating Procedures/Policies carry out the following tasks:
- Receive, sort, and prioritise all samples arriving at Specimen Reception for processing. This includes unpacking, checking, labelling, delivering, preparing, and storing samples some of which may be high risk or leaking.

Carefully prepare samples for analysis. This may involve centrifuging and separating samples, pipetting serum, measuring, and recording volumes and determining sample PH to ensure sample suitability for analysis.

Accurately enter and check patient request information onto laboratory computer system. Book in electronically ordered laboratory tests.

Deal with problem samples and refer to team leader/senior Laboratory staff if necessary, rejecting unsuitable specimens and entering the information onto the laboratory computer system in accordance with protocol.

Reject unsuitable requests/specimens and enter relevant information onto the laboratory computer system in accordance with protocol.

Prioritise, record and package samples for referral to local and Mainland UK laboratories ensuring samples are packaged correctly and transported without delay. Monitor Mainland UK referral returns. Provide information to service users regarding sample and transport requirements.

As assigned by line manager prepare incubator and collect Cryoglobulin samples from the clinical area.

As directed by line manager prepare diluted acid for 24hr urine containers

Operate, monitor and maintain equipment associated with sample preparation and storage including centrifuges, safety cabinets, laboratory pipettes, fridges and freezers etc. Keep records as required.

Monitor and maintain adequate stocks of laboratory consumables for work area and report to line manager/senior laboratory staff when replacements are required

As required, accurately measure, weigh and prepare solutions for laboratory use

Check, deliver and store goods received into the laboratory as required

Provide admin cover for collating and dispatching laboratory reports to users.

Carry out general admin duties as required including scanning, archiving and recalling request forms.

Assist visitors and HSC personnel presenting at specimen reception

Carry out housekeeping duties to include but not limited to the following:
Safe removal and disposal of laboratory and confidential waste in accordance with protocols including clinical specimens.

Bagging of dirty white coats to go to the laundry and sorting of returned clean white coats.

Defrosting of fridges and freezers as required

Cleaning and decontamination of equipment

Cleaning and decontamination of laboratory work benches and general lab area

**Haematology**

In addition to points 4,5,6,10,11 and 13 above the following also apply;
As directed, operate and maintain laboratory analysers/equipment as per protocol e.g. Load/unload and archive samples, prepare and replenish bulk solutions, perform legionella flushing, clean and maintain department centrifuges and update appropriate records.

Carry out department specific administration duties e.g. filing bone marrow slides and reports, filing paperwork, printing all blood bank forms, printing in house Lab accession numbers, inputting all rejected samples onto Q Pulse.

Traceability tasks in Blood Bank including; pairing slips, marking units off LIMS as used, phoning wards when traceability slips are outstanding, refer cases to Haemovigilance team when required, check off returned traceability books and file away.

Carry out department specific housekeeping duties/checks including but not limited to:

- Safe removal and disposal of laboratory and confidential waste in accordance with protocols including clinical specimens.
- Fridge/ freezer alarm checks (local and switchboard) and change chart recorder paper on fridges / freezers.
