Research Associate in Antarctic Climate Change

Sheffield, United Kingdom University of Sheffield Full time

Are you interested in working for a world top 100 University? We are seeking to recruit a Research Associate in Antarctic Climate Change to use historical climate observations and climate model simulations to explore decadal climate variability in the Amundsen Sea region. This is part of a NERC funded project, DeCAdeS: Drivers of Oceanic Change in the Amundsen Sea. This project aims to better understand West Antarctic Ice Sheet loss by understanding the processes driving decadal variability in heat content on the Amundsen Sea continental shelf. This position is led by Dr Julie Jones of the University of Sheffield, and this position is jointly supervised by Dr Tom Bracegirdle of the British Antarctic Survey in Cambridge.

The biggest uncertainty in estimates of future sea level is the contribution of the vast Antarctic Ice Sheet. Much of recent mass loss has occurred on the Pine Island and Thwaites glaciers in the West Antarctic. Studies show that on decadal timescales variability in ocean heat content on the Amundsen Sea continental shelf modulates ice sheet loss, and this variability is strongly linked to changes in winds. This project is focused on understand the processes that drive decadal variability in the Amundsen Sea continental shelf waters and how these are influenced by large-scale climate variability and longer-term climate change, using novel in-situ measurements, satellite observations, numerical models and historical climate data.

As one of the largest Geography departments in the UK, the Department of Geography at the University of Sheffield has a vibrant community of undergraduates, postgraduates and postdoctoral researchers. The department enjoys a long-standing international reputation for academic research led by staff who are passionate about exploring and teaching on some of the biggest issues facing the world today. Working with Dr Julie Jones, the post holder will be part of the Ice and ClimatE Research at Sheffield (ICERS) Group, and will also work closely with Dr Tom Bracegirdle at the British Antarctic Survey, both of whom will provide support and guidance throughout the research project.

We’re one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK. The University’s Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development.
