Provide a supporting role to hospital and community users of point of care equipment under direction of the POCT coordinator. Liaise with service users and provide basic advice when required. Respond to telephone enquiries from staff in both primary and secondary care, give advice where appropriate and exercise judgement in referring to Lead Biomedical Scientist or clinical staff when necessary. Plan and prioritise own workload under supervision and be fully aware of service requirements.

Ensure that your own work is carried out efficiently, accurately and in accordance with departmental procedures. Be part of a team responsible for the routine maintenance of specific analysers, equipment or tests e.g. Blood Gas analysers, glucose meters and other POCT equipment. Report unsatisfactory performance of POCT equipment to POCT management and clinical leads.

Respond to all reports of analyser faults and poor performance in a timely manner, prioritising the workload by severity of the fault or the needs of the service. Carry out first line equipment troubleshooting and carrying out initial repairs following guidance from service engineers to resolve faults. Ensure POCT stock levels are monitored and maintained and be familiar with the principles of stock rotation. Monitor internal quality control of POCT equipment on a daily/weekly basis.

Under direction of the POCT Lead Biomedical Scientist, train nursing, medical and laboratory staff in the use of point of care equipment. Update information such as training registers, standard operating procedures, analyser maintenance programmes. Distribute samples to POCT sites for EQA schemes, assist in the collection and data input for the various schemes. Undertake projects/audits for POCT as directed by the Lead Biomedical Scientist.

Participate in method evaluations and comparison studies for point of care tests. Activate user passwords and use bespoke POCT data manager packages such as POCT Solutions and AQURE. To maintain the POCT section of the quality management system including closing non-conformances and following up audit findings and associated corrective actions. Supervise and train new staff and placement students in the section.
