Materials Thermal Ageing

Culham, United Kingdom CCFE Full time

**Overview of Responsibilities**:
**The Role**

Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to make a difference? Join our team and contribute to the future of fusion energy. On the Materials Science Summer Placement, you will play a pivotal role in thermal ageing of advanced reduced activation ferritic martensitic steels.

Numerous new alloys have been developed as part of the UKAEA NEURONE (neutron irradiations of advanced steels) programme, an ambitious undertaking to develop a new high-temperature fusion-grade steel in the next five years. As part of this, we need to understand how these microstructures will evolve over sustained durations at elevated temperature (mimicking the fusion environment). Using on site furnace facilities, the student will conduct thermal ageing of the steels for different durations (1 week, 1 month, 2 months, etc.) and characterise the microstructures evolved using microscopy (including optical and scanning electron), alongside other techniques such as x-ray diffraction. The student will report on findings and present these to the alloy design team who will implement changes to the processing parameters accordingly.

We offer excellent opportunities for motivated and enthusiastic undergraduate students studying at UK Universities to join our 8-12-week summer placement scheme. The scheme is designed for students entering their penultimate or final year of studies, with potential opportunities post-graduation.

Our scheme gives you a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of one of the most advanced sources of sustainable and clean energy. During your summer programme, you will experience a broad range of diverse tasks, work on real projects, and gain invaluable experience within the fusion energy sector. UKAEA offers a nurturing and supportive community for you to gain some valuable work experience in a fascinating and rapidly evolving industry.

This role requires employees to **complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS)**, including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions.
