**JOB DESCRIPTION**

**Job Title**: Lay Community Worker

**Employing body**:The Methodist Church in West Somerset

**Responsible to**:The Circuit Leadership Team (CLT) through the Circuit Stewards. The lay employee will work under the supervision of the Superintendent Presbyter of the West Somerset Circuit. Their Line Manager will be the Circuit Management Officer.

**Purpose and Objectives**:To enable the Methodist churches of Alcombe, Minehead and Porlock to engage in outreach work within their communities.

**Main Tasks**:

- To encourage and support the churches of Alcombe, Minehead and Porlock in new outreach initiatives.
- To encourage connections between the appointed Methodist churches, local groups and agencies, and churches of other traditions.
- Alongside other members of the circuit staff team, to work from the circuit offices in Minehead.
- To attend all meetings of the circuit staff and CLT, and other meetings, as requested.
- To keep adequate records of contacts and of work undertaken, including hours worked.
- To engage with other opportunities to enhance the life of the circuit, as are within the capabilities and level of responsibility of the post holder.

**Terms and conditions (summary)**
- The rate of pay for this post is £12.50 per hour
- Normal working pattern: Half time (20 hours per week)
- There will be opportunities for training.
- All reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.
- At least one day free of responsibilities each week.
- 28 days statutory annual leave entitlement per year; pro rata for this part-time post.

**Management**
- The Circuit Management Officer will be the line manager and the Superintendent Presbyter will be the supervisor of the lay employee, whose shared responsibilities will be to:

- Become familiar with the work of the Lay Employee.
- Work with the Lay Employee to encourage the churches in the West Somerset Circuit to engage in outreach activities.
- Ensure good communications between all the ‘stakeholders’ (groups and networks) involved.
- Monitor and evaluate progress with the Lay Employee on a regular basis.
- Act as a ‘sounding board’ to the Lay Employee.

**Job Types**: Part-time, Fixed term contract
Contract length: 60 months

**Salary**: £12.50 per hour
