An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, motivated and passionate Physiotherapy Technical Instructor to join our highly regarded musculoskeletal outpatient department at Derriford Hospital and Tavistock Hospital. The new post will support the MSK outpatient department across both the sites with the assessment and physiotherapeutic rehabilitation of variety of musculoskeletal pathologies. The post holders will support the running of a range of rehabilitation classes as well as providing 1:1 assessment and treatment sessions.

This post will provide the successful applicant the opportunity to learn and develop their own skills through team support in addition to mentoring and appraising more junior staff member.

Working under the supervision of Physiotherapy staff, to undertake a variety of tasks (clinical and non-clinical), to support the delivery of physiotherapy to patients within the outpatient physiotherapy service and hydrotherapy service.

To work without direct supervision, but under the direction of registered staffin the performance of specific tasks for an individual or group of patients within the physiotherapy outpatient service. To deliver treatment and rehabilitation programmes within protocols and competencies specific to this post. To act as first contact in specific situations. To perform reviews for patients working within a competency framework.

To assist in the smooth running of the hydrotherapy department, treat patients within a competency framework, become familiar with all aspects of this department including a basic understanding of the mechanisms relating to hydrotherapy and some administrative duties.

Supervision takes the form of observation of practice, regular formal and informal training. Access to advice and support from senior physiotherapists is always available, regular checks will be made to ensure workload is managed, clinical work and case notes are routinely evaluated.

Clinical

1. To work without direct supervision, but under the direction of the registered staffin the performance of specific tasks for an individual or group of patients, as part of their treatment and rehabilitation programmes including hydrotherapy.

**Duties may include**:
Implementation of treatment plans delegated by registered staff

Progress patients within specific pathways

Recognising patients deviating from pathway and manage appropriately

Teaching use of walking aids

Performing reviews of selected rheumatology patients

Carrying own caseload of non-complex patients

Discharging of specific patients

1. To maintain confidentiality at all times in relation to patients and their treatment.

1. To be involved in the training, development and supervision needs of Physiotherapy Assistants.

1. To assist qualified staff in the treatment of heavily dependent patients, this includes the use of hoists, patient handling equipment, etc.

1. To update patient records in a concise, accurate and timely manner in line with departmental standards.

1. To be aware at all times of the needs of patients during illness or disability and to promote and encourage independence and restoration of function.

1. To undertake any clerical duties as necessary. This may include maintaining stock levels,registration of patients, reception duties, filing, dealing with telephone calls, booking patient appointments, collation of statistics and cleaning.

1. Communicate with the physiotherapists, and other members of the multi-professional team, regarding changes in the patient's condition or any other useful information.

1. To communicate effectively with patients and carers. Communication skills of persuasion, motivation and explanation will be needed. Barriers to communication may include loss of hearing, altered perception, pain, fear.

Organisational

1. To attend organised mandatory training sessions, including annual fire lectures, cardiac resuscitation lectures and any in-service training arranged by the senior staff and Physiotherapy Manager.

1. To abide by the CSP Physiotherapy Assistants Code of Conduct.

1. To be aware of and comply with Trust and Departmental policies and procedures.

1. To be aware of the Health and Safety aspects of your work and abide by policies including the prompt recording and documentation of incidents and accidents.

1. Any other duties that may be considered appropriate by the qualified staff or the Physiotherapy Manager

1. Participate in the staff appraisal scheme as an appraisee and be responsible for complying with your agreed personal development programmes to meet set objectives and competencies.

1. To participate in the appraisal system and Personal Development

Programme.

1. To undertake as directed the collection of data for use in service audit.

1. Be responsible for the safe and competent use of mobility, gym, and hydrotherapy equipment by patients, through teaching, training and supervision of practice
