As a Registered Health Care Professional working in immunisations, you will work as part of the primary care team to deliver a safe and effective service of COVID-19 vaccinations.

You will undertake activities such as clinical assessment, dilution and drawing up of the vaccine from multi-dose vials.

**Main duties of the job**

Main responsibilities:

- Assisting with the setup of your vaccination station
- Assist the Lead vaccinator when required
- Be responsible for safe storage and removal of the vaccines from the fridge and maintaining the cold chain (This will include record keeping)
- Be responsible for checking the resuscitation equipment and anaphylaxis drug when asked by the Lead vaccinator
- Conducting clinical assessments.
- Reviewing medical histories and potential adverse reactions.
- Preparation of the vaccine prior to administration
- Ensuring the best possible clinical outcomes by using up-to-date skills and adhering to

**Job responsibilities**

Key accountabilities:

- Undertake multiple roles such as: clinical assessment, dilution and drawing up of the vaccine from multi-dose vials
- Enable the delivery of vaccinations to all eligible patients
- Ensure vaccine station is ready and equipped at the beginning of your session and replenish items of stock as required throughout the session
- Ensure good housekeeping / tidiness / cleanliness of work station

Clinical assessment:

- Conduct pre-vaccination clinical assessments to confirm if the patient meets the criteria for safe vaccination, including previous vaccinations undertaken, current health condition, assessment of any clinical conditions (medical history) and allergies
- Seek advice of onsite Lead vaccinator/ or designated Clinical Lead if any uncertainty
- Ensure knowledge of conditions that affect suitability for vaccination and previous vaccination history.
- Address any potential adverse reaction risks and provide the patient with information and advice on any adverse reactions and contra indications
- Address any concerns that may arise regarding the vaccine and contra-indications with patients
- Ensure the patients understanding of the vaccination implications and get consent agreement on vaccination
- Work closely with the Administration support to ensure that appropriate patient demographics and medical information in relation to the vaccination is entered onto the patient record system

Drawing-up:

- Ensure vaccine preparation, drawing-up, correct handling & storage, is carried out according to the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)
- Ensure the reconstruction of the vaccine as per manufacturers instructions.
- Perform a visual check of the vaccine type, serial number and thawing/expiry date.

Patient Safety and Clinical Governance
- Use clinical judgement and risk assessments to keep the patients as safe as possible
- Follow the local and national policies including Patient Group Directions (PGDs) and national protocols or standard operating procedures (SOPs) are followed. These include SOPs on the safe storage, administration and disposal of the vaccine
- Communicate with the Lead vaccinator prior to administering a vaccine to a patient with the potential for an immediate reaction to the vaccine. This should only be undertaken after discussion and decision reached with patients own GP /Clinical. This should be recorded on the patient record
- Assist in the monitoring and maintenance of the health, safety and security of self and others in work area. Assist in the identification and assessment risks in work activities
- Practise in accordance within your own professional codes of practice guidelines
- Work with the team to maintain high standards of infection control and a well-maintained environment
- Actively promote diversity and sustain relationships that promote dignity, rights and responsibilities. Identify and take action to address discrimination and oppression
- Ensure that your practice complies with Data Protection/ Confidentiality/ Caldicott principles in addition to Statutory and Regulatory guidelines of the Professional Bodies
- Safeguard people by recognising and responding when an adult or child might be at risk from abuse but also recognising their own limits and asking for
