Sen Tutors and Mentors Needed for Mental Health

Bristol, United Kingdom Leading Lights Education & Wellbeing Full time

**Inspiring SEN Tutors needed for mental health non profit**

**About us**:
As a tutoring and/ or mentoring practitioner for our passionate and highly skilled team, you have the opportunity to make a genuine difference to educational and mental health inequality for children impacted by special educational needs and mental health.

**Vision**

At Leading Lights, our vision is a society where imagination, love, and endless possibilities are the everyday words that people associate with child and family services. It is a vision where young people can walk into their futures with joy.

**What we do**

Leading Lights want to bring love to children and families’ services. We don’t think it’s enough to care a bit, you have to care a lot if you want to transform outcomes.

We provide imaginative, carefully curated and case managed programmes for children and families with social, emotional, and mental health needs (SEMH). We believe that education and wellbeing are fundamentally linked and you can’t change long term outcomes without looking at issues holistically. We work with the whole family as much as possible, and for us it’s about long-term change, not short term outcomes.

We are on a mission to ensure that no child or family has to lose out on a world of potential because of mental health, which means they can’t access school or find it hard to make friends. We might not be able to change the past, and we don’t have magic wands, but we do believe that every child and family has the right to get services designed and delivered for their individual needs, and with love and imagination.

We work with children and young people at both primary and secondary school age who are impacted because of mental health. They often have a diagnosed mental health condition or are waiting for a diagnosis, and it is often correlated with a history of trauma or psychological distress, or another disability, learning need, or physical illness. Sometimes, they have not had a diagnosis but are experiencing significant degrees of anxiety and this has led to behavioural changes, self-harming or suicidal thoughts. Many of the children we work with are also affected by issues such as domestic violence, abuse, identity issues, bullying and many are young carers.

Whilst each child is affected differently, common issues that we see are: Problems accessing school either through non-attendance, or difficulty focusing and thriving at school, difficulties making friends leading to significant social isolation, issues with confidence and self-esteem which can lead to difficulties leaving the house or even their rooms for days at a time, suicidal attempts or ideation, self-harm, difficulties accessing support and help from statutory services, and panic attacks. Such disadvantage has long-term impact on outcomes in education, mental health, health and employment.

**We want to make three key differences**:
1. Improved mental health.

2. Reduced social isolation

3. Increased ability to thrive at school.

This role is for our outreach services where we work with local authorities to provide comprehensive education and wellbeing packages for vulnerable children who are often not able to attend school due to special educational needs and mental health needs. We also provide a range of services such as counselling, therapeutic mentoring, play therapy, small group therapeutic activities, and emotional support services through our Glow services but practitioners will tend to be working on our outreach services for this specific role.

**The Role**:
This is a part-time self-employed role with competitive sessional pay varying on experience, and the individual placement. Sessions often take place within family homes, the local communities or sometimes in schools or community based settings.

Some of our team are full-time professional tutors and or mentors. Our placements can fit around other commitments, although we do ask that you commit to your young people once placed; They really need you to be reliable for them

Personal Profile:
You will have:

- More than two years teaching experience working with vulnerable secondary age young people, including those with mental health needs and SEND
- A track record for showing fantastic progress where you have made significant difference in young people's outcomes
