Seasonal Instructor

Wareham, United Kingdom Dorset Council Full time

**About The Role**:
Our instructor team are at the sharp end of all we do. They are customer facing at all times and must be polite, courteous, dynamic and energetic whatever the time of day.

We provide a comprehensive training package at the start of the season which, upon completion, should enable all instructors to deliver all the activities on offer at the centre. We provide lots of support, shadowing and monitoring opportunities too. Sometimes it is so busy that you may end up delivering the same activity several times in a row. At other times you may be able to stay with one group and rotate through lots of activities. Flexibility is the key.

If our instructors aren't outside teaching they might be in the kitchen baking cakes with a young person, or fixing damaged equipment or maybe even helping with routine checks.

**What you will be doing**:
Carey Outdoor Education Centre, situated within the Purbeck area of Dorset, are looking for talented, independent and hard-working instructors to join the small team for the 2024 season.

The centre, which is part of the Dorset Outdoor Education Service, works mainly with school residential groups ranging from Year 3 to Year 8. Groups sleep at the centre in lovely Bell tents, typically staying for three days and two nights and our ethos is to support our guests in "living and learning in the outdoors".

We also work with wonderful young people and adults from Dorset who access the centre for alternative provision and are particularly keen to hear from applicants with skills and experience in this area. This often involves working with clients on a 1:1 basis who may display challenging behaviour.

**Further Information**:
We are looking for enthusiastic applicants with clear experience of working with young people, ideally in the outdoor environment. This might be through instructing at an outdoor centre, teaching within a school or even through care and play work.

We would expect you to hold a First Aid qualification along with an award or experience delivering archery, climbing or bushcraft.

We will provide training but will expect you to be able to work safely in the outdoor environment and to make clear links to the needs of the customer through your teaching. This could be through linking to the National Curriculum or a school's topic or theme.

After training there will be times when you are the only member of staff on duty at the centre. You will need to sleep in our staff accommodation on a rota which will average once a week. There is an additional payment for this.

There is a requirement for a DBS check.
