The post holder will have joint responsibility for daily work and task allocation across a team of seven Healthcare Science Assistants, who deliver and collect equipment across the RUH site, as well as ensuring adequate stocks of consumables and equipment are maintained within the Dept. As well as allocating work using a computer-based system, the role includes the rostering of duties, managing, recording, arranging and ensuring that repairs and service of equipment under maintenance contract takes place effectively. The post holder will also need to be a competent computer user. The post holder will need to be able to operate independently and competently in all aspects of the role, whilst also working in a highly cooperative manner with the second supervisor.

To allocate equipment delivery tasks to staff using the RUH CapMan computer system. To be responsible for ensuring that equipment requested is delivered in a timely manner to wards and departments. To ensure that MEL staff follow correct procedures and processes in respect of equipment delivery, collection and decontamination. To be responsible for ensuring equipment is undamaged, fit for use and, when appropriate, arranging repair through internal or external sources.

To work closely with internal and external contractors to ensure that MEL equipment is maintained. To ensure that all equipment requiring repair is assessed by the role holder, accurately recorded on departmental systems, reported to service providers and repairs monitored, to ensure timely repair takes place. Where possible, undertake minor repairs on equipment to return to safe use. To be responsible for the management of MEL consumables stock in accordance with procedures.

To liaise with medical equipment training staff to ensure that any issues relating to equipment use / knowledge within wards are highlighted, thereby assisting in identifying training needs. To liaise with ward staff on operational problems relating to the service provided by the Medical Equipment Library, dealing effectively with any issues arising during periods of equipment shortage. To assist nursing staff in respect of damaged or malfunctioning MEL equipment, ensuring that appropriate corrective action is taken to rectify the problem. To be responsible for the accuracy and completeness of equipment loan records using bespoke Excel spreadsheets.

Contacting GP surgeries, District Nurses and Care homes for the return of equipment used by patients on discharge. To be proactive in seeking ways to improve team service performance and fully contribute to regular management meetings. Report any issues or concerns which may adversely affect the team to MEL line management. To ensure the Portering Department and RUH Site Office are updated at the end of each working day on MEL equipment availability for out of hours cover.
