Midwife

Band 6 midwifes to work within our friendly service.

We are two acute trusts
- one in Taunton and one in Yeovil and support just over 5000 births per year.

We are working towards introducing a continuity of carer model in line with better births and the transformation programme.

To be a registered Midwife, a competent and skilled practitioner able to assess, provide care, advice and support to women (and families) throughout the antenatal, labour and postnatal period. This post may either be within one of the community teams or the hospital core teams.

He/she is able to provide both Midwife led care for women with normal pregnancies, and able to work as part of a team providing care to women with a range of medical/obstetric/social and psychological complications.

Provides a full range of health, education and social care advice to women within an continuity of carer model pre-conceptually and antenatally and provides care in a range of environments through the intrapartum and postnatal periods for women and their babies.

Act as a preceptor for newly qualified staff and participate in teaching clinical skills to students and support staff. Act as mentor/assessor and able to take on responsibility for teaching clinical skills to both individuals and groups.

To always act in a manner consistent with the NMC Midwives Rules and Standards and Code of Professional Conduct, carrying out his/her duties in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.

The post holder will develop effective working relationships with:

- Midwives
- Support staff

- Obstetricians
- Anaesthetist’s
- Neonatal staff
- GP’s
- Health Visitors
- Safeguarding & Social Care
- Colleagues in other NHS Trusts and organisations

**The post holder is required to**:

- Establish and maintain relationships with the women, families and multidisciplinary team through excellent communication
- Have the ability to motivate, negotiate and train others.
- Demonstrate the ability to empathise and communicate unpleasant news sensitively.
- Provide counselling and reassurance within their scope of responsibility. Where barriers and difficulties arise in exercising these skills early identification and referral will be expected.
- Empower the woman to make informed choices whilst being aware of safeguarding issues and act as an advocate as necessary
- Liaise and participate with child protection issues at all levels.
