Norfolk is a large, rural county with a varied landscape including the famous Broads, the dry sandy Breckland, the crumbling cliffs of the north and east - and some of the most fertile soils in Britain. For most of its history, Norfolk was one of the wealthiest and most densely populated counties of England, and so its archaeology is outstandingly rich.

Norfolk’s Finds Identification and Recording Service is a partnership between the British Museum’s Portable Antiquities Scheme and the Historic Environment Service of Norfolk County Council. The service records over 5,000 objects per year on the PAS’s database, making it the busiest office in the PAS by quite some distance; it also works closely with the Historic Environment Record and Norwich Castle Museum. It is based in the Castle Museum Study Centre in the heart of Norwich.

This is a rare opportunity to join the Finds Identification and Recording Service in a senior role in the recording of Norfolk’s wide and varied archaeological resource. Norfolk is one of the biggest offices in the PAS partnership and the team includes individuals specialising in numismatics, photography and illustration. It also has a good track record in training early-career staff and supporting research projects, and furthering knowledge understanding and appreciation of Norfolk’s historic environment.

As Team Leader, you will take the lead on managing staff and their workloads, and supervise and develop less experienced colleagues. You will represent Norfolk’s archaeological finds recording interests at appropriate levels, including partnerships with the British Museum, the Norfolk Historic Environment Record, Norfolk Museums Service, and amateur groups including metal-detector clubs.

We are looking for an experienced individual with an in-depth understanding of the Portable Antiquities Scheme and ideally an Exegesis-based Historic Environment Record. You must have experience in recording large, complex and varied assemblages, and be a confident communicator.

Weekend and Evening work will be required.

Travel throughout Norfolk and to other location such as British Museum will be required.
