Whole-time, Royal College of Surgeons approved Fellow in Neurosurgery with interest in Neuro-Oncology to the University Hospital, Nottingham, based at Queen's Medical Centre Campus, Nottingham. The post is suited for a post CCT or senior trainee looking to gain expert specialist experience in Neuro-Oncology and develop insight into service delivery and resource utilisation as a clinician. This post is RCS England Approved.

The Neurosurgery Service at Nottingham University Hospital provides an extremely busy specialty service in brain and intra-dural spinal tumours to the population of the East Midlands and beyond. The centre undertakes around 500 tumour operations annually and is recognised as a Tessa Jowell Brain Tumour Centre of Excellence.

There are established multidisciplinary clinics for management of high and low grade tumours as well as specific MDTs for general Neuro-Oncology, brain metastases (SRS), skull base tumours and pituitary tumours. The medical staff are well supported by a team of neuro-oncology specialist nurses.

There is also access to an intraoperative MRI scan equipped theatre suite and extensive use is made of neuronavigation, intraoperative high quality ultrasound, 5-ALA guided craniotomy and awake craniotomies with cortical mapping & anatomical and subpial resection techniques as appropriate. The fellow will gain experience of all of these.

Main duties of the job

Experience will also be possible in intradural/intramedullary spinal tumours if desired. The department has a number of on-going clinical trials and strong collaboration with university academic departments. There is an active audit programme and opportunity to develop personal projects both within Nottingham and in collaboration with the UK Neuro-Oncology community.

The post holder will also be expected to contribute to the care of Neuro-Oncology patients via running rapid access Neuro-Oncology clinics, a leading role in ward rounds and to participate in the on call rota as a senior trainee.

The post is designed to offer a comprehensive clinical experience and administrative skills to prepare the post-holder for a position as a Neurosurgery Consultant with an interest in Neuro-Oncology.

Working for our organisation

This is a teaching hospital situated on the campus of the Queen's Medical Centre, which includes the Medical School. It currently houses all acute major specialties except for Cardiothoracic Surgery which is carried out in Nottingham City Hospital. There are approximately 1,400 beds.

There are facilities for Intensive Care both in Adult Neurosurgery and separately in Paediatric Neurosurgery. The hospital also contains facilities for all branches of medicine and surgery and maintains a close contact with the university academic departments. NUH is the Major trauma centre for the East Midlands.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Main responsibilities include:
**Clinical**

Clinics - to attend clinics related to the specialty including neuro oncology post MDT rapid access clinic

Ward Rounds - daily with Registrars,SHOs, Specialist Nurses and separately with Consultant, expected to lead morning ward rounds or any other as required by the department

Operating - expected to get involved with specialist procedures as appropriate

Research - expected to undertake clinical research and ongoing clinical trials while being in the post.

All duties are within University Hospitals, Nottingham.

**Teaching**

There will be opportunities to teach undergraduates and nursing staff and other health professionals

- GMC licence to practice
- MBBS or other recognised equivalent medical qualification registerable with GMC

Professional Qualifications/Development
