As a Vehicle Examiner you’ll will have good knowledge and experience of all types of motor vehicle, it’s more than inspecting vehicles. You will play a key role in ensuring the traveling public are safe and comfortable whilst travelling in a correctly licensed vehicle. It’s a challenging role which requires you to have a consistent approach at all times.

**About you**
As a Vehicle Examiner you will bring to the role:

- Appropriate level 3 motor vehicle technician qualification
- Hold or be able to achieve the Dept. of Transport nominated Tester Status
- Knowledge of Servicing and Repairing motor vehicles including Electrically Propelled light vehicles.
- Ability to identify and record faults whilst carrying out vehicle inspections.
- Knowledge of Servicing and Repairing motor vehicles including Electrically Propelled light vehicles.

The council has a duty to ensure that people can use these services safely, confident that all vehicles are inspected and drivers checked in accordance with strict driver and vehicle licensing regulations.

The Taxi & Private Hire Licensing section licences more than 11,000 Hackney Carriage (taxis) & Private Hire drivers and vehicles in Leeds. The Vehicle Examiner role involves the inspection of vehicles to ensure their suitability and Safety for licensing as Taxi & Private Hire vehicles in Leeds and to ensure these vehicles meet the conditions set out by the Council. The post holder will be authorised by the council to support the function of this regulatory service, which works within a strict legal framework.

**Job Purpose**:
The key objectives of the section are:
- (a) To ensure that the taxi and private hire trade in Leeds is operated in a safe and professional manner, and that the correct standards of safety, comfort and appearance are satisfied by all vehicles, drivers and operators.

(b) To ensure that all Council vehicles are operated in accordance with the Council's fleet management policy.

**Responsibilities**:
To carry out full Vehicle Inspections and tests in accordance with the schedule of testing requirements, Council's conditions and criteria, and construction and use regulations.

To carry out on street and off site inspections of vehicles, drivers, ranks and operator premises to ensure compliance with legal requirements and licence conditions.

To carry out roadside vehicle general safety Inspections in conjunction with West Yorkshire Police.
Preparing information for and attending Court in respect of offences under the Road Traffic Act 1988 and all relative legislation.

To carry out PSV and permit 19 vehicle tests / inspections.

To maintain appropriate electronic and manual records on tests carried out and notices and inspection reports as may be required.

To plan and implement quality assurance checks on vehicle inspections, record and report findings to the Quality and Standards Manager.

Provide advice, supervision, guidance and support to the other vehicles examiners and garage staff in the absence of the Quality and Standards Manager.

To supervise and manage garage bookings and workflows and allocate work within the garage team.
