Laboratory dutiesThe appointee will be expected to provide a comprehensive service, including authorisation and interpretation of results as well as day-to-day supervision of diagnostic methods and examination of specimens. There would also be expected to be involvement in policy and SOP preparation, responsibility for quality assurance performance within the department, including taking part in all relevant National External Quality Assurance (NEQAS) programmes and responsibility for achieving and maintaining full accreditation with UKAS (UK) Ltd. Business planning, including the assessment and introduction of new methods as well as forward planning for staff and equipment requirements may also be included in the role. Clinical DutiesThe appointee will be expected to provide a clinical advisory service with continuing responsibility for care of patients with infections in liaison with clinical consultant colleagues.

The appointee will also be expected to provide clinical leadership on the development of strategy (diagnostic and clinical) across the Trust and to participate in construction of relevant policies for the Trust / Group as required. Provision of equivalent services from the Trust to other healthcare providers who have service level agreement (SLA) with the Trust will also be expected as required. Consultants are expected to do ICU ward rounds daily as well as multidisciplinary ward round as appropriate in haematology, oncology, C.diff, NNU etc. The post holder may be asked to participate in cross site work with Kettering.

Out of hours dutiesThe appointee will have out-of-hours responsibilities for emergency microbiology and infection control advice and cover of other microbiology consultant colleagues in Northampton when they are on leave, as part of rota arrangement. The post holder may be asked to participate in cross site on call work with Kettering.Out of hours cover is provided by off-site telephone contact. Remote computer access will be provided for authorisation purposes. The appointee will be expected to visit the hospital out of hours in an emergency situation only.

The agreed on-call pay banding at present is A and 8% (immediate availability is expected) for this post. AdministrativeThere will be a responsibility to develop services and to be involved in business planning, including assessment and introduction of new methods and forward planning for staff and equipment requirements.There will be requirement to participate in audit, clinical governance, annual job plan review and appraisal and revalidation.The appointee will be expected to attend Divisional Clinical Governance meetings and Microbiology Departmental meetings in the Trust / Group as required. Participate in Public Health DutiesThere will be a requirement for close liaison with the Regional PHE laboratory and PHE, providing support in reporting outbreaks, cluster of cases and any other relevant SI to the appropriate authorities. Infection Prevention and ControlThe appointee will be expected to provide medical leadership and input to the nurse led Infection Prevention and Control Team by way of daily liaison.

TeachingThe appointee will be expected to assist in the professional supervision and management of trainee medical and scientific staff. To organise and participate in teaching, examination and accreditation duties for undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity and to participate in the education and teaching of nursing staff. Research and AuditThe appointee will be expected to contribute to the development of clinical and organisational guidelines, to review and develop policies for clinical practice and effectiveness, to participate in the strategic planning for the service and to comply with current Trust policies and procedures.
