The University’s 2040 Strategy highlights Inclusion, especially Commitment Two which seeks to encourage widening access to study. The Access and Articulation Team are tasked with supporting this commitment, working with pupils in the Senior Phase (S4-6) within Scotland’s schools.

Increasingly schools are using events traditionally targeted at the Senior Phase to introduce younger pupils to the concept of a University education. The needs of pupils in the Broad General Education (BGE) phase (S1-3) are often very different and the mode of delivery used for more focused Senior Phase pupils is not appropriate. The pupils do not wish to stand out from their peer groups so if we wish to engage them we need to develop activities which attract their attention, are fun whilst also delivering meaningful careers advice.

Post Covid, the team are finding increasing numbers of Senior Phase pupils who still have no future plan, the team can discuss basic options but would benefit from more targeted careers-based resources.

The University’s Careers and Employability Team are qualified to inform the development of appropriate materials and activities and to deliver staff training in the use of a variety of tools to support pupils attending careers events. This provides a resource efficient approach to ensuring our teams are equipped with appropriate resources to meet both the emerging needs of pupils in the BGE phase and those SP pupils still struggling to make decisions on their future pathway.

This role would see an intern engaging with both teams to create resources for school pupils to help inform their future university journeys. The project would very much be a pilot focussing initially on Widening Access pupils but with a view that, if successful, resources could be shared with the other recruitment teams within the University.

Salary will be at the appropriate point on Grade 2, £21,134 per annum.
