- Job description- We have a unique and exciting opportunity in our Ouse Washes Field Team for a Denver Sluice Officer. You will be required to operate the sluice and water levels for one of the organisation’s most critical sites in East Anglia in terms of flood risk management and water resources, a system of flow and level management structures.
In addition to this you will be required to assist the passage of boats through Denver lock and provide excellent customer service. You will be contributing to the effective management, regulation, and development of navigation use on and around Denver.
The post holder will need to live on site in one of the Environment Agency’s properties and is therefore a lifestyle change as well as a job.
The property that you would rent is currently undergoing refurbishment and updating. You can have an opportunity to view the house that the post holder will be living in, and ask questions, by attending one of our Open Days held at the Denver Sluice on 29th July and 2nd August. A viewing will also be possible as part of the interviews.
You will be required to work alternate weekends at Denver with a structured day off in the week. You will also need to be flexible with your working pattern as evening work will be required.
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to support a shift role at Denver when required within this small team. You will also be required to be on standby over the weekend you work. This will attract additional payments.

The team- Whilst you will be part of the Ouse Washes Field Team, which is based at our Ely Depot, you will live and work at the Denver Sluice Complex.
You will work closely with our Field Teams, Asset Performance and Waterways team.
We are a diverse team, responsible for the delivery of maintenance programmes on rivers in the East of England. The team respond to environmental incidents, such as flooding and pollution, both day and night.
- Experience/skills required- We are seeking people with a passion for the environment to protect communities who are at risk of flooding. The way in which you adapt, communicate, and use your initiative to overcome challenges will set you apart.
As you will be working in a small team to deliver, it’s essential that you can communicate well with colleagues, contractors, partners, and members of the public. A good work ethic and “can do” attitude is also essential.
You will be able to demonstrate the following essential criteria:

- Knowledge and experience of managing Health & Safety.
- Be comfortable using information technology especially Microsoft Office including Excel
- Good organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple, conflicting priorities.
- A practical approach to problem-solving, articulating solutions in a simple and persuasive way.
- Full UK driving licence.
