Infection Prevention and Control Practitioner

The post holder will be part of a visible, proactive Infection Prevention and Control Team across all of the North West Anglia Foundation Trust hospital sites acting as a role model with a positive professional image of the team and the organisation. They will support the Chief Nurse and Director of Infection Prevention and Control and Infection Prevention and Control Lead Nursein meeting national requirements to reduce healthcare associated infections.

The key responsibilities are to be a proactive member of the Infection Prevention and Control Team developing the skills and knowledge to support the surveillance, prevention, and control of infection within the hospital setting.
- To be a resource and advisor providing a service to wards and departments offering patients and staff information, support and guidance in all aspects of infection prevention and control.
- Monitor screening and management of patients with infectious disease e.g. MRSA,Clostridium difficile, ESBLs etc.
- Ensure infection control procedures are carried out in accordance with policies and procedures in operation.
- Participate in the investigation and management of outbreaks of infection.
- Be a member of appropriate committees representing the infection control team and the Trust.
- Participate actively in Infection Control Team meetings and provide information as required for related committees within the Clinical Governance framework.
- Raise awareness within the Trust of infection control practice issues
- Participate in twice weekly ward round on the Isolation Ward.
- Work with the infection control doctor/consultant microbiologist on infection control surveillance programmes and data collection.
- Be responsible for daily surveillance of all isolated patients.
- Take responsibility for national surgical site surveillance as directed.
- Contribute to production of and monitoring of care bundles and high impact interventions, support clinical areas to implement these.
- Undertake audit as required

2. Act independently to plan, deliver, monitor and evaluate complex care using enhanced clinical assessments, diagnostics, and interventions.
- Access and interpret results and information on Anglia ICE, datix, Information Services, E track
- Laboratory - Microbiology, for the use of surveillance and monitoring Infections.
- Act as a source of advice on standards of practice in respect to infection control
- Liaise with medical and nursing staff around the transfer of patients from and to the isolation unit.
- Ensure infection related adverse events are reported on Datix.
- Maintain clear contemporaneous records of advice and information given to patients and staff.

1. Develop, deliver, and evaluate education and training opportunities for others within own scope of practice.
- Participate in the delivery of education programmes for all staff according to the trust wide plan.
- Assess and identify training needs for all staff in link areas and implement programmes accordingly.
- Evaluate and review training as appropriate.

1. Act as a positive role model in providing clinically effective care to patients.
- Communicate throughout the Trust using a range of techniques to ensure patients are appropriately protected and/or treated where necessary.
- Promote and encourage innovative clinical practice to support a culture of excellence within the wider health and care team. Be an active member of the Infection Control Team meeting and Trust Infection Prevention and Control Committee as required.
