Purpose of The Role

The Fitter /Machinist will work as part of a small team of multi-skilled maintenance staff to ensure any allocated work is carried out in an efficient manner in line with set standards to maximise the safety, availability and reliability of the RPSI’s locomotives and carriages.

The Fitter / Machinist will principally be required to manufacture new parts for rolling stock using manual machine tools, from bar stock or rough castings. The Fitter / Machinist role will also include the dismantling and rebuilding of rolling stock.
Key Responsibilities
**_Locomotive & Carriage Maintenance_**
- Ensure a safe method of working is in place at all times.
- Participate in routine maintenance in order to ensure locomotives are available when needed to the prescribed standards and in the most cost effective manner.
- Participate in record keeping in accordance with the Locomotive and Carriage Vehicle Instructions (VMI).
- Preparing the locomotive for service, cleaning and steam raising to support S Exam and Pre Trip examinations as required.
- Supervising operational volunteers when required.
- Participate in maintenance and cleaning of all tools, spares and consumables held on the locomotives and carriages.
- Managing simple repairs to tools and equipment to ensure good and safe order.

Strategy & Planning
- Support the Technical Operations Engineer to develop and deliver the detailed overhaul schedule for RPSI locomotives and carriages.
- Organise regular cleaning and routine maintenance to ensure locomotives are available when needed to the prescribed standards and in the most cost-effective manner.
- Support all elements of locomotive and carriage overhauls and heavy maintenance.
- Work closely with the Technical Operations Engineer with the management of the VMI paperwork and record keeping.
- Support and develop best practice and procedures to ensure delivery of locomotives to time and the appropriate standards.

Acquisition & Deployment
- Ensure standards are met and observed and risks/hazards are clearly identified and effectively controlled, raising concerns immediately to the Foreman or Technical Operations Engineer.
- Develop and maintain own competence and assist other staff and volunteers through mentoring and coaching.

Personal Qualities.

Relevant experience.
- 5 years’ experience working with manual milling machines and lathes.
- Good mechanical skills.

Minimum 2 years’ experience in a railway environment OR a similar heavy engineering workplace.
- Demonstrate understanding and interpretation of engineering drawings/ specifications.
- Experience of basic steam locomotives systems and running maintenance of one or more steam locomotives.
- Experience of routine boiler maintenance and steam locomotive fittings; pipework and valves.
- Experience of Engineering Fabrication, brazing and welding.

Special Aptitudes.
- Ability to work as part of a team and independently.
- Working knowledge of health and safety; with knowledge of safe working practices within a workshop or factory production line environment.
- Maintain effective communication with RPSI personnel, in particular Foreman and Technical Operations Engineer.
- Be able to conduct yourself in a professional and respectful manner towards RPSI and railway company colleagues.
- Ability to use initiative whilst respecting team reporting arrangements.
- Willing to contribute to self-development, learning, understanding, employing new technologies, tools and techniques according to role requirements.
- Willingness to partake in regular company Drugs and Alcohol procedures

Qualifications.
- 5 GCSEs (or equivalent: e.g City & Guilds level 2, IVQ Diploma) including at least Grade C in English and Maths.
- Level 2 engineering qualification
- Level 3 engineering qualification.
- Current Northern Ireland Railways (NIR) or Irish Rail Personal Track Safety (PTS) qualification.

Circumstances.
- Full current driving licence for work related purposes when required to attend other locations.
- Flexible attitude to work with ability to work additional hours when required or at short notice, including weekends.
- Able to satisfy such medical standards as applicable to the role.
