A rare opportunity has risen to join the Breast Imaging team as a Mammography Assistant.

We are seeking to employ an enthusiastic and motivated individual to the assist in giving individualised care to patients.

The post holder will form part of the WWL Breast Imaging team including the South Lancashire Breast Screening Programme, the Symptomatic Breast Service, and the Family History Service.

We provide a screening service across multiple sites throughout Wigan, Chorley, South Ribble and South Lancashire. Individuals must be able to travel to all sites when required.

Applicants must have full UK driving license and have access to a car.

Evidence of qualifications will be required at interview and during compliance checks.

The Mammography Assistant is expected to actively participate as a member of the breast imaging team and is responsible for contributing towards the smooth and efficient running of the department.

The Mammography Assistant will assist the radiologists and radiographers in giving individualised care to the patients. The Mammography Assistant is expected to chaperone patients, including during interventional procedures, giving support and care in a professional and empathetic way.

They are expected to have good communication skills to assist in the care of a wide variety of often anxious and worried patients and their families, in addition to working in and liaising with other members of the MDT. A Mammography Assistant must be meticulous and accurate with documentation and all required IT systems. A good working knowledge of PACS, CRIS and NBSS will be expected after training.

The post holder will be responsible for

actively working within the Trust policies and statutory legislation including emergency resuscitation, manual handling, infection control, disposal of clinical waste, and control of substances hazardous to health.

On-Call

Please note that senior positions (AFC band 8A or above) may be expected to participate in an on-call rota, if the role is predominantly operational.

Provide assistance and support to the Breast Imaging clinical team.

Develop professional relationships with patients and carers.

Prepare imaging rooms prior to examinations/procedures following infection control and other Trust policies.

Observe local information governance procedures including patient identification and accurate data entry.

Change and prepare patients prior to examination giving explanation of procedure.

To be actively involved in each breast imaging procedure following ANTT when required.

Chaperone patients including during breast intervention procedures giving support and care in a professional and empathetic way.

Assistant in the care in a wide variety of often anxious and worried patients and their families.

Provide basic care, assistance, and support to patients, including situations where difficult conversations may take place.

Provide post-procedural care for patient maintaining privacy and dignity of patients at all times.

Provide patients with appropriate post-procedural information leaflets and letters.

Provide and receive sensitive information concerning a patient’s medical condition.

Responsible for maintaining equipment cleanliness post procedure which can include hazardous substances.

Report any change in patient condition or any problem or hazard within the department to the senior radiographer in charge.

To ensure efficient workflow is maintained by monitoring patient pathways and escalate any issues to the senior radiographer in charge.

Work independently in regards to routine delegated tasks following established good practice and refer non routine tasks appropriately.

Provide administrative support including the use of patient appointment systems.

Operate relevant Trust I.T systems, inputting, maintaining, and monitoring accurate patient data entry and updating patient records in a timely manner.

Maintain patient confidentiality at all times following Trust policies and data protection laws.
