**JOB DESCRIPTION**

**Post Title**:Reading Mentor

**Hours**:37.5 hours per week (Part Time/Flexible hours considered)

Term Time + INSET

**Responsible to**: Literacy Co-ordinator

**Salary**: Band 1 £24,833.00 Full Time Equivalent - actual pro - rata based on hours.

**Purpose of Post**
- Use skills/training/experience to support learning with students through effective Classroom and Intervention Support.
- Establish productive working relationships with students, acting as a role model and setting high expectations.
- To demonstrate professional characteristics at all times with all stakeholders, colleagues, students and parents.
- To contribute to Stockport Academy’s continuous improvement and actively support the ULT and Stockport Academy ethos of ‘The Best in Everyone’ and ‘No Excuses - No Limits’.

**Key Tasks**

**Intervention Support**
- Provide 1:1 support sessions for agreed student cohort.
- To lead small group work sessions away from the classroom.
- Set challenging and demanding expectations and promote self-esteem and independence.
- Monitor the impact of interventions
- To use and support the use of online platforms to enhance learning
- Communicate with outside stakeholders, most commonly parents, about student learning
- Attend relevant meetings as required and participate in training and other learning activities and performance development as required.
- Assist with the supervision of students during lesson times, including before and after school and at lunchtimes where appropriate.
- Accompany teaching staff and students on trips and visits and other school activities as required.
- To complete any other tasks commensurate with the role and responsibility.

**Classroom Support**
- Advance learning when working with small groups of students.
- Advance learning when working with individual students.
- Organise and manage learning activities in ways which keep students safe, and direct the work, where relevant, of other adults in the classroom.
- Use ICT skills to advance learning where appropriate.
- Assist with the planning of learning activities and support students to achieve learning goals.
- Be aware of student problems/progress/achievements and report to the teacher, Progress Leader or parent as appropriate.
- Encourage students to interact and engage in activities led by the teacher.

**Culture and Climate**
- Recognise and respond appropriately to situations that challenge equality of opportunity.
- To maintain a “business like” and on task atmosphere in the Hub which is conducive to independent learning
- Promote good pupil behaviour, dealing with incidents in line with established policy and support classroom teacher in managing pupil behaviour, reporting difficulties as appropriate.
- Establish good relationships with students, acting as a role model and being aware of and responding to individual needs.
- Assist the teacher to supervise and support students ensuring their safety and access to learning.

**Professional Knowledge and Understanding**
- Understand the key factors that affect students’ learning and progress.
- Know how to contribute to students’ effective personalised provision by taking account of relevant benchmark and assessment data.
- Have sufficient understanding of behaviour issues, classroom support and intervention expertise to support the development, learning and progress of students across the ability range.
- Have achieved a nationally recognised qualification at level 2 or above in English/literacy and mathematics/numeracy
- Know how to use ICT to support student progress and intervention.
- Know how statutory and non-statutory frameworks for the school curriculum relate to the age and ability ranges of the students they support.
- Understand the objectives, content and intended outcomes for the learning activities in which they are involved
- Know how to support students in accessing the curriculum in accordance with the special educational needs (SEN) code of practice and disabilities legislation
- Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health and safety, equal opportunities, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to the appropriate person
- To have due regard for data protection, confidentiality and Health and Safety policies
- To undertake appropriate training as required
- All staff are expected to keep up to date with safeguarding legislation and requirements and work to ensure the safety of students at all times.
- Stockport Academy delivers Character Education through the Future Me framework and staff must purposefully model the behaviours expected by the school ethos and actively act as role models to students. Staff should use the language of values as part of their conversations in delivery of their roles, in lessons and around school as part of the co-ordinated character programme.
