The Transport Projects Service is working with teams across the council and with partners such as Transport for London and neighbouring boroughs to deliver major transport projects that are transforming the borough. The main duties of the role are delivery of transport projects; strategy development and programming; effective team and staff management; financial planning and management; leading transformation, change and service improvement; strong community engagement and customer service; collaboration and partnership working; and close working with elected members.

We are looking to recruit a new colleague, service head and member of the Climate Change and Transport management team, and who has high levels of energy, enthusiasm, commitment and flexibility. You will have significant management experience and an environmental, transport, regeneration or other relevant background. You will head up a team of hard working and dedicated officers with a can-do attitude, to deliver an ambitious, complex and challenging work programme.

The post holder will work across teams and services, with stakeholders, elected representatives and local communities, residents and businesses to drive, lead and manage the transformation of Islington’s neighbourhoods, streets and public spaces by delivering a portfolio of large transport projects, including liveable neighbourhoods, cycleways, redesign of main roads and junctions, new public spaces and greening schemes.

To co-ordinate, manage and drive an exceptional, high quality, high performing Transport Projects Service in support of the council’s net zero carbon and cleaner, greener safer priorities and improved outcomes for residents and the borough.

To lead and manage the Transport Projects Service, specialist advisors and service representatives, working in collaboration within and on behalf of other council services, teams and with residents and community organisations, borough partners and supporting the council’s vision, values and behaviours.

To co-ordinate all aspects of the Transport Projects Service, including programme governance, project delivery, research, promotion, funding bids, performance management and reporting in relation to the Transport Projects Service including:

- Project management of large transport projects, including public space improvements, redesign of junctions, new cycleways, road danger reduction schemes, and greening and accessibility projects
- Project management of complex traffic management schemes, including Liveable Neighbourhoods, Low Traffic Neighbourhoods and Lorry Control schemes
- Internal coordination across council departments, services and teams
- Strategic coordination with other transport operators, most notably Transport for London and neighbouring boroughs
- Contributing to transport policy, strategy and action planning
- Fundraising

To co-ordinate the interface and facilitate effective collaboration between the programme, council departments and services, Councillors, Borough partners, (sub)regional partners (e.g. London Councils, GLA), other local authorities, funding organisations, government departments and agencies.
