Ward 2 is a short stay unit which is open from Monday to Saturday and closed on Sundays. We predominantly care for patient who are receiving planned chemotherapy and/or are undergoing minor procedures that require an overnight stay.
- Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for patients undergoing chemotherapy and a diverse range of minor procedures.
Act as a clinical role model for new staff, reflecting the philosophy, beliefs, and standards of the department.
- To effectively communicate with all members of the multidisciplinary team to promote a positive working partnership across all departments/ wards.
- To act as a preceptor/mentor/clinical supervisor for junior staff and students.
- Ensure that all prescribed drugs and treatments are given correctly and in accordance with Trust policy, including the correct care and custody of controlled drugs.
- Escalate concerns in a patient’s condition to senior members of the nursing team, medical staff.
- To maintain full compliance with all essential training and clinical skills competencies.
- To identify areas for self-development and training within the Performance Planning and Development Review structure.
As a band 6 Ward Sister/Charge Nurse it is also expected that you would play an active role in the development of the team and be willing to take on managerial duties whilst supporting the ward manager.

We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years.
We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.
To work collaboratively with and provide support to the unit managers. To take responsibility for the management of the department, including patient care and skill mix, and the development and support of the nursing staff in the absence of the ward manager.
To demonstrate initiative and vision in continuing to move the service forward whilst assisting in implementing service changes / developments.
1. To deputise for and support the Ward Manager
2. Provide management support for the Ward 2 services junior staff and act as mentor to designated staff.
3. Assess, plan and implement clinical care and maintain associated patient records.
4. To organise daily work schedule ensuring appropriate and effective skill mix and deployment of staff for appropriate patient needs
5. To have an awareness of the staff and non staff budget
6. Be aware of Health and Safety issues and ensure relevant risk assessments are undertaken.
7. Report and record all accidents and complaints according to the agreed policy, investigating speedily and compassionately.
8. Ensure all trust policies and procedures are adhered to and new ones implemented as necessary
