**Purpose of Post**

To care for the animals that pass through the Animal Reception Centre (ARC), maintaining their health and welfare and ensuring relevant legislation is adhered to.

**Main Duties & Responsibilities**

1. Carrying out collections and deliveries of animals to/from aircraft and prioritising these trips.

2. Releasing animals from containers into housings and ensuring that their needs are met and checking compliance of their containers to International standards.

3. When necessary, administer basic treatment to sick animals under guidance from Vets.

4. Check paperwork of animals travelling by air to ensure compliance within the legislative framework (Pet Travel Scheme).

5. Deal with routine enquiries from public and airlines regarding shipment of animals by air.

6. Complete administration after normal office hours.

7. Receive payments for services provided and calculate charges.

8. Carry out basic stock control to ensure supplies meet demands.

9. Carry out security checks using X-Ray machine where necessary.

10. Use forklift truck and other manual handling equipment as and when necessary.

11. Carry out checks of animals and facilities in the cargo area and terminals.

12. Enforces statutory instruments under the Animal Health Act 1981; Animal
Welfare Act 2006; The Horse Passport Order 2004; The Animals and Animals
Products Regulations 2006; The Balai Directive 92/65; EU Directive 91/496
EU Directive 1/2005 and others that may be relevant.

13. Actively seek to implement the City of London’s Occupational Health and

Safety Policy in relation to the duties of the post, and at all times give due regard to the health and safety of both themselves and others when carrying out their duties.

14. Actively seek to implement the City of London’s Equal Opportunity Policy and the objective to promote equality of opportunity in relation to the duties of the post.

15. To undertake any other duties that may reasonably be requested appropriate to the grade.

**Criteria for Progression to Grade C**:
(Progression into the next grade of a recognised career grade scheme is dependent upon the employee meeting the criteria of the grade and there being permanent sufficient work available for them to undertake at the higher level).

In general the post-holder at Grade C level will be required to work with less supervision and deal with more complex work. They would be required to use their increased and wider professional, technical and operational knowledge to work on their own in comparison to the Grade B level. The post-holder will therefore be required to have the knowledge, skills and experience to carry out additional and more complex duties in line with the following:

- A relevant qualification such as the Diploma in Zoo Animal Management or the equivalent level of skills, knowledge & experience such as may be gained by working at the Animal Reception Centre (for approximately 5 years). This experience will indicate both depth and breadth of knowledge of Animal Health and will include some specialism in an area of the service.
- Strong oral communication skills in order to explain technical information that any member of the public or owner of pets will understand. This will include persons who do not have English as their first language and may be face to face or over the telephone (with a possible poor line).
- Good written communication skills so that when in correspondence, provide clear and concise explanations of technical matters that animal owners, airline employees or government agencies will understand.
- Good knowledge of the procedures and byelaws of the British Airports Authority and meeting Health and Safety requirements when dealing with the public, agencies and visitors within a busy environment.
- A willingness to broaden your range of knowledge and skills seeking a multi-skill approach with an expectation to continually develop.
- Carry out more complex or none standard tasks without the supervision of an

Animal Attendant Supervisor.
- Impart knowledge gained to colleagues through mentoring or on the job training.
- To deliver guided tours to visitors (e.g. Police, Colleges, etc.) with sufficient knowledge to answer a wide range of questions.
