RSR are seeking a Detention Officer for a 18 month temporary contract with Surrey Police. The role is paying £12.77 per hour PAYE.
The Shift pattern is:
12hr shifts, which is 2 early shifts 0600-1800hrs, followed by 2 night shifts 1800-0600 and then 4 days off. Approximately once every 8 weeks, 2 extra days off are accrued - making 6 days off

Purpose of the role

The purpose of the role is
- to be responsible for the reception and documentation of detained persons and to assist at all times in the detention and care of such persons whilst complying with the legislative responsibilities.
- to maximise investigative opportunities in accordance with Force and local priorities.
- to promote equality, diversity and Human Rights in working practices ensuring colleagues, detained persons and other persons within the custody centre are treated fairly.
- to promote and endorse the concept of quality of service within the terms of the Surrey Police Charter.

Main duties and responsibilities
- To provide a safe and secure environment for those within police detention and support other custody staff to ensure that the rights and entitlements of detained persons are protected.
- To be responsible, at the direction of the Custody Officer, for the health, sustenance and welfare of detained persons. To maintain vigilance and to keep under control any person detained at or escorted within a police station.
- To assist police officers and other designated staff to keep control of detained persons who are violent, uncooperative or potential escapees. This includes the use of such force as is reasonable in the circumstances.
- To maintain the security and integrity of visits to detained persons by legal representatives, relatives and other authorised persons.
- To enter information correctly onto the custody computer system,
- To assist in the maintenance of custody records of actions taken in relation to detained persons, to ensure compliance with legislation and ensure that relevant data is accurately recorded on paper and electronic systems, and that records are produced to the highest standard with Data Quality foremost.
- To assist Custody Officers in the risk assessments of detainees and to bring to the attention of the Custody Officer any issue relating to a detained person that may pose a threat or increased risk to themselves or others, or who is in need of additional care.
- To search persons in accordance with the relevant legislation, policy and procedures, whilst respecting the rights and dignity of the individual. This includes; Non-intimate searches and seizure of items found, searches or examinations to find identifying marks or determine identity and to photograph the same and Intimate searches.
- To be responsible for the handling, recording, storage, movement and return of detainee's property ensuring all property is accounted for.
- To be responsible for the taking of photographs, DNA samples, finger and palm prints for the purposes of establishing the identity of detained persons in connection with ongoing enquiries and investigations. To be responsible for the taking of footwear impressions with the approved equipment, for the purposes of assisting ongoing enquiries and investigations, including the requirement to give speculative search warnings.
- To gather information from a variety of sources in order to verify identity of detained persons and support any actions taken, ensuring that this information is obtained in accordance with relevant legislation and policy.
- To gather and disseminate intelligence in the appropriate manner and ensure that such intelligence is used in an ethical manner and in accordance with the relevant legislation, policy and protocols.
- To ensure that the cells, adjoining passages and other ancillary areas are clean and tidy to ensure the maintenance of a safe, acceptable and hygienic environment. This includes ensuring the cleansing of such areas, as is required which is fouled or contaminated by a detained person or other circumstances.
- To be responsible for the issues and laundry of bedding and for the repair and replacement of damaged equipment. To assist the Force in making recoveries for damage caused by providing evidence in support of any such claim.
- To undertake clerical duties as required in relation to systems within the custody suite to provide an efficient and effective service.
- Subject to the required training, prevailing operational conditions and at the direction of the Custody Officer, to assist with the taking of video capture images for the purposes of assisting identification procedures in relation to detained persons. To assist in the administration of these procedures as required.
