The responsibilities for the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero for 2023 are as follows:

For 2023, our priorities are:

- Ensure security of energy supply this winter, next winter and in the longer-term - bringing down energy bills and reducing inflation.
- Ensure the UK is on track to meet its legally binding Net Zero commitments and support economic growth by significantly speeding up delivery of network infrastructure and domestic energy production.
- Improve the energy efficiency of UK homes, businesses and public sector buildings to meet the 15% demand reduction ambition.
- Deliver current schemes to support energy consumers with their bills and develop options for long-term reform to improve how the electricity market works for families and businesses.
- Seize the economic benefits of Net Zero, including the jobs and growth created through investment in new green industries.
- Pass the Energy Bill to support the emerging CCUS and hydrogen sectors; to update the governance of the energy system; and to reduce the time taken to consent offshore wind.

**Job description**:
Do you want to play a key role in enabling the UK's transition to Net Zero by decarbonising the electricity system?

We are looking for a talented and highly motivated Implementation Policy Advisor to join the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s Review of Electricity Market Arrangements (REMA) team - a high profile team where you will have the chance to shape how Great Britain’s electricity system works for generators and consumers.

The UK has committed to fully decarbonising the power sector by 2035. The REMA team are central to meeting this commitment, holding responsibility for redesigning electricity markets so that the UK reaches net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Our electricity markets have driven significant decarbonisation since 2010: we have built 37 GW of renewables and moved away from high polluting coal generation, reducing power sector emissions by around 68% whilst maintaining security of energy supply.

However, whilst we have made huge progress in decarbonising the power sector, our electricity markets were not designed for the new challenges that Net Zero brings. As the backbone of the future electricity system, it is critical that electricity markets are designed to rapidly deploy high volumes of renewables and other low carbon technologies, including energy storage, hydrogen, and carbon capture, so that we can meet our climate change targets, maintain security of energy supply, and deliver value for money for consumers.

The REMA team are responsible for assessing, designing, and delivering a package of potential electricity market reforms that can drive the investment needed. A consultation on reform options recently closed, and our work over the next few months will focus on using evidence gathered through the consultation, alongside external research, analysis and through working closely with internal and external stakeholders, to determine which options can best meet the Government’s objectives for the future electricity system.

This role will specifically focus on the implementation and delivery of the REMA programme. You will be providing support to policy colleagues to help define the roadmap for implementation of the preferred policy options.
