An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Audiologist to join our friendly team of 11 Audiologists and 6 Audiological Assistants. We are looking for a conscientious, motivated and flexible newly qualified or experienced Audiologist. Hearing Services provides a comprehensive service to adults from the Sheffield area and beyond.

We actively support research projects in conjunction with Neurotology and the trust Research and Development Department. This department uses the Auditbase system.

We provide support to a large ENT and Otoneurology Service in the form of specialist Vestibular Diagnostic and Rehabilitation Services, Tinnitus Therapy Services and BAHA and Middle Ear Acoustic Implants. The Department has also been accredited by IQIP’s

Performs and selects suitable routine & non-routine diagnostic test procedures; including audiograms, middle ear function tests, tinnitus and reflex tests following recommended procedure guidelines on adults from ENT, wards and GP’s and secondary referrals from other consultants. Careful and accurate recording of patient sessions either in hospital notes or on the departments Patient Management System.

To assess patients referred by Direct Referral from GP as per Dept policy, to include ear examination, history taking, diagnostic testing and audit questionnaires.

Communicating condition related information in a sensitive way and developing treatment plans in agreement with the patient.

Ensuring the correct outcome is achieved and a secondary referral to other professionals is actioned as required.

Prescribing a hearing aid after discussion with, and agreement of the patient.

Responsible for ensuring that all equipment used by self is in good working order and calibrated on a daily basis. Reports faults as to departmental policies.

To perform precise otoscopic examinations to recommended procedures and be able to identify abnormal and normal appearances of the ear.

Selecting appropriate hearing aids / prescription formulae for individual patients, from a wide range of analogue and digital hearing aids.

To perform verification tests (Real Ear Measurements) to ensure best fit of hearing aid, ensuring correct measurement and accurate placement of probe microphones into adult ears.

To provide rehabilitation, counselling, advice and training to new and existing hearing aid patients. All patients will be hearing impaired but many will have complex communication needs and will need reassurance and persuasion in accepting their hearing loss / hearing aid and motivation / encouragement to get patients to wear the hearing aid. High level of communication skill needed were patients have barriers to understanding due to level of hearing loss / poor speech discrimination.

To carry out follow up appointments and perform outcome measures in the form of questionnaires. Carrying out hearing aid repairs and more complex fine-tuning of hearing aids to patients needs.

Take impressions of adult ears for hearing aid earmoulds whilst following recommended procedures, selecting correct type and venting of mould for hearing aid and patients needs. Modifying earmoulds as required using specialist machinery.

Dealing with enquiries from patients (both in person and via telephone) who have a hearing loss and who maybe angry / distressed, requiring time and patience. Regular, accurate entering and updating patient information onto departments Patient Management System.

Responsible for ensuring that own work area is prepared for own caseload. To plan and prioritise own duties (e.g. own clinics)

Provide advice to staff in care homes and on wards in the management and care of hearing aids for adult patients

Participate in Continuing Professional Development and training to maintain competency and up to date knowledge of procedures and policies.

Contributing to discussions on national and local service development and commenting on proposals and develops procedures / services for own working area

Liaise with clerical staff and doctors and other professionals with the aim of improving patient experience.

Being aware of and complying at all times to Confidentiality, Health and Safety issues and reporting all untoward incidents to the relevant person.
