The Role

The Hospitality Kitchen Assistant will be expected to set and maintain high standards of catering and service provision within the department.

The post will involve working alongside the Head Chef and Duty Manger in the day-to-day food production at the Students’ Union and other University Hospitality Outlets.

The post holder will work as a Short-Order-Chef at the Students’ Union during University term-time, and work as part of the kitchen team at other outlets to produce food for University staff and conference visitors when needed.

Appointments are normally made within 4 - 8 weeks of the closing date.

What you’ll do
- To be an active, flexible and dedicated member of the Hospitality Kitchen Team.
- To assist in achieving the required revenue and gross profit margins for all food produced as set out in the departmental budget.
- To assist in the maintaining waste, recording waste and actively helping to reducing.
- To assist in the running and service delivery of the kitchen brigade within the Hospitality Department is done in line with the departmental aims and objectives as set out at the Personal Development Reviews.
- To ensure that all food is produced and presented to the standards as laid out and agreed with the Head of Hospitality.
- Ensure that all food is served in the correct portion control to the agreed standards.
- To ensure that all production, service and storage areas are clean and comply with all health and safety and food safety legislation.
- To ensure that all equipment is maintained in a clean and hygienic manner. To ensure that all equipment is correctly used by only trained staff.
- To ensure that all equipment faults are reported in a timely manner through the correct channels as stipulated by the Head of Hospitality Services.
- To ensure that the kitchens are maintained to be a clean and safe working environment. To ensure that all kitchen staff are aware of any temporary hazards and their working practices amended accordingly.
- To comply with all University policies as set out on the University web site.
- To inform your line manager of any training needs that you may have in order to complete any of your set tasks, as well as the facilitation of your personal and role development, in line with the objectives of the department.
- To check the weight, quality and temperature of all goods in, and ensure correct and timely storage. Checking of invoices against delivery notes and purchase orders. To include notifying the Head Chef or Duty Manager of low stock levels.
- To actively participate in the Hospitality services in the total quality and customer care initiatives.
- To be seen to be a pro active member of the kitchen team in developing a good working ethic within the department that encourages continued staff and product development in all areas.
- To perform any such reasonable duties as given by your line managers or their nominee in a timely and efficient manner in accordance with the standards that have been dictated to you.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends.
- To undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post.

The position also requires for the Kitchen Assistant/Chef to be fully flexible in meeting the needs of the department and are therefore able to work in all the areas of the Hospitality department.

Who you are - Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge and Skills required

**Essential**
- Level 1 Food Hygiene
- Previous food preparation experience in a food outlet or kitchen environment.
- Experience of producing food under own supervision
- Ability to produce food to a set standard following standard recipe.
- Ability to work unsupervised to follow the tasks and the standards as set out by their line manager.
- Ability to work as part of a team and at times unsupervised
- Oral (spoken) and Written Welsh Level A0

An ability to understand the bilingual nature of the University and an awareness of the procedures in place to support working bilingually.
