We have an exciting opportunity for a talented Senior Software Developer to join our newly formed Genomic Surveillance Unit. No science background needed

The Genomic Surveillance Unit is a not-for-profit organisation, whose mission is to enable all countries to use genomic surveillance as a practical tool for local disease control and as a pillar of global pandemic preparedness, with a primary focus on supporting low and middle-income countries.

**About the role**:
As Senior Software Developer, you will take ownership for the development of robust, maintainable, and performant software products for Surveillance operations.

You will be responsible for:

- Developing performant and maintainable software products and tools.
- Engaging with development partners and working with other Surveillance operations delivery teams to deliver integrated products.
- Following an Agile Development framework and working with Product Managers to support the definition of user stories, product features, and sprint definitions.
- Ensuring environments and tools are in place for development, testing and production. This includes continuous integration/continuous delivery, source control management, issue management and testing.
- Following and contributing to appropriate software development working practices within the product development team.
- Collaborating with the Lead Software Developer and other team leads in developing and maintaining a detailed system, data and technology architecture.
- Operating in a way that maximises delivery while managing technical debt effectively.

**About you**:
To be successful in this role, you should have the following knowledge, skills and experience:

- Experience of Agile Software Development methods such as SCRUM
- Strong Python skills and good knowledge of popular python packages
- Familiarity with web-based technologies (HTML / CSS / JavaScript) and modern web development techniques
- Knowledge and experience with modern software development practices, including version control, continuous integration, unit testing and workflow management tools such as Jira, Gitlab, etc.
- Familiarity with SQL, databases, and database design
- Experience working with a wide variety of technologies and on diverse problems
- Experience of CI/CD and containerization (Docker, Singularity)
- Ability to quickly understand scientific, technical and process challenges and breakdown complex problems into actionable steps
- Ability to work in a frequently changing environment with the capability to interpret management information to amend plans
- Ability to prioritise, manage workload, and deliver agreed activities consistently on time
- Strategic thinking, ability to see the 'bigger picture'
- Ability to build collaborative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels

**About Us**:
Advances in genetic epidemiology are creating new opportunities for the surveillance, prevention and control of infectious diseases. Our current focus areas are COVID-19 and malaria. For COVID-19, genomic surveillance has proved vital in identifying and tracking variants, and guiding public health decisions. For Malaria, genomic surveillance is a key part of the WHO's technical strategy for malaria elimination.

**Salary**:£47,500 - £57,000
