**Job summary**:
The Homeland Security Group (HSG) unites capabilities and expertise to deliver better outcomes from the UK’s response to the most serious domestic threats - Terrorism, Cyber, State Threats and Economic Crime.

The group will strengthen coordination and collective focus across a range of growing and overlapping threats, whilst remaining consistent with existing strategies. Working with partners, HSG will foster more transparent and sustainable collaboration between national security, law enforcement and other relevant communities to enhance capabilities and leverage our response to threats.

As a part of the Home Office, the role of the Homeland Security Group is to:

- support the Home Secretary to develop and implement strategies to keep our people and interests safe and secure
- build HMG capabilities to reduce national security risk
- reduce volume of, and harm from, economic crime, particularly for the most vulnerable
- work in partnership with public and private sectors in the UK and overseas to deliver better outcomes
- ensure legitimate economic growth and prosperity

The team:
This role represents a unique opportunity to work in the world of intelligence, national security, and law enforcement, and to carry out some of the most operationally important and sensitive casework in the Home Office.

It is a busy, friendly, and diverse team of 19 people and sits within the wider National Security Unit (NSU) in NSD, which also includes responsibility for inquests and inquiries, Northern Ireland related terrorism and oversight of the Investigatory Powers Commissioner and Intelligence and Security Parliamentary Committee, amongst other things. The Unit is committed to placing a high focus on learning and development and staff wellbeing.

**Job description**:
The Warrantry team is a rewarding and important place to work. Every week you will work on cases that have a material impact on the security of the UK, and at times you will be responsible for working on issues that are at the top of the Government’s agenda. It is not unusual to hear your cases being discussed on the news and at times our work is closely scrutinised by the courts, Parliament and the public.

You will be working in a fast paced, friendly, supportive team where there are many developmental opportunities. All members of NSU benefit from central Civil Service learning and development, countless workshops led by operational partners and other government departments, and the opportunity to participate in wider directorate projects.

This role provides excellent links to work taking place elsewhere in the directorate, the department and many other areas of government. The Warrantry team is a fantastic place to build up skills that will serve you well for the rest of your career and the profile and diversity of our work provides ample opportunity to demonstrate competencies that will be valuable for future roles.

**Person specification**:
What you will do:
The Warrantry team operate a shift system (the office is staffed 07:00 to 19:00) and a 24/7 on call system for urgent cases out of hours, and the post-holder will be expected to participate in these on rotation. The post attracts ‘shift disturbance allowance’, on-call and overtime payments. Some flexibility around hours may be required at times of high operational demand.

Given the sensitive nature of the work that we do, applicants must hold or be prepared to obtain DV clearance. The nature of the role means that the post holder will need to be based in 2 Marsham Street 100% of the time. Working from home would only be available on an ad hoc, exceptional basis. However, arrangements such as compressed hours will be considered.

**Essential criteria**

For this role you will:

- Develop expertise and a broad professional network to understand how the political and social situations in countries around the world impact the UK’s security processes. You will use intelligence, operational policy guidance and legislation to analyse cases and form conclusions, resulting in the submission of sound, well-reasoned advice to the Home Secretary and Investigatory Powers Commissioner’s Office (IPCO). Full training on casework decision-making, as well as mentoring from experienced staff, is provided.
- You will need to enga
