The post holder will be undertaking phlebotomy tasks on a day by day basis, This will be working within the Occupational Health Department.

For this role it is necessary that you are a caring and courteous individual that can work under pressure in a challenging environment.

The Occupational Health team is a dynamic team who work collaboratively to ensure all our patients who require blood sampling, receive this by a dedicated team of trained professionals who have the patient at the center of their work.

Follow the venepuncture procedure

Accurate, legible labelling of all samples to confirm patient identity in accordance with Trust policy and Procedures

Collecting data/information for internal/external audit purposes

Identify, select and utilise a suitable site fit for the purpose of blood collection using personal, judgmental skills.

Identify select and use suitable/appropriate equipment for the specimen collection

Obtain blood samples from service users to a standard fit for laboratory testing. Ensuring minimum distress or discomfort is caused to the patient during the blood collection process.

Interpret handwritten requests for blood collection.

Communicate information to service users aged 16 years and older, genders, sexual orientation, cultures or physical abilities in a none-discriminatory or judgmental manner and be able to overcoming barriers of communication within these areas.

Give service users, guardians and carer’s appropriate advice regarding Venepuncture site care and availability of test results.

Assessing medical staff and signing manuals after attending phlebotomy theory course and ensuring procedures are followed correctly.

Ensure pre and post-test requirements have been fulfilled and ensure the patient/donor is fit for discharge from your care.

Ensure safe and appropriate delivery or transport of the specimens to the laboratories

Appropriate use of the pod system

Independently manage own allocated workload and perform and undertake routine and none-routine requests for blood specimen collections.

Assemble equipment fit for use and in a manner, which makes it fit for disposal by you or others.

The Aseptic Collection of blood for blood

Cleaning workstations (static or stationary) in in accordance with IPC (including general, departmental housekeeping duties and cleaning audits).

Completing daily stocking of work station

2. Verbal and physical

4. Anxious patients and
5. Mental and physical
6. Infections and infestations on wards e.g. MRSA, diarrhoea, sickness, scabies and head lice
