Newton Abbot, United Kingdom Bank Youth Project Full time

**We're looking for someone with the skills and experience to help lead activities, run sessions, and offer guidance for young people (9-19) - particularly boys - at our weekday open-access youth club evenings in Ashburton on the edge of Dartmoor.**

The role involves working two or three evenings a week with a small team of part-time staff and volunteers. Along with a real empathy and interest in supporting young people as they grow to independence, you will be a good communicator, leader and organiser.

**About us**:The Bank Youth Project (BYP) is a small, independent charity. Our goal is to empower young people to improve their life opportunities by helping them grow as individuals and members of the community. For 25 years, we have offered a safe space that local young people can call their own, where they can relax, be creative, have fun, make friends, develop interests and skills, discuss, increase self-awareness, take on responsibility, and seek advice and support. We currently run four weekday evening sessions a week with a small team of paid part-time youth support workers and occasional volunteers.

**Core responsibilities**
- Working with young people (our members) at our weekday evening club nights in our building and elsewhere for occasional off-site activities.
- Supporting our members to fully and actively participate in the programme and services, including one-to-one support as needed (issues such as sexual health, mental health, drugs and alcohol, bullying, money and employment, education, social media...)
- ensuring members have the chance to influence the planning, delivery and review of our programme and services
- Keeping records of young people’s attendance and participation
- Helping to review and evaluate sessions
- Helping to ensure health and safety, equal opportunities, child protection and all other BYP policies and procedures are observed and implemented
- Attending periodic supervision sessions with your line manager and engaging in training programmes as agreed, as well as have DBS and other necessary checks
- Helping to raise the profile of BYP to local young people (eg, social media, community engagement)

Skills and experience we are looking for include:

- experience of working with young people (age 9-19), ideally in a youth work setting
- an understanding of the issues facing young people
- an understanding of equal opportunities and child protection
- the ability to contact, engage and motivate young people
- good listening and communication skills with individuals and groups from a variety of backgrounds
- ability to work as part of a team of paid staff and volunteers
- ability to work on own initiative and make decisions under pressure
- respect for inclusivity, discretion and confidentiality
- confidence to mentor and offer guidance to young people on topics such as sexual health, mental health, drugs and alcohol...
- experience of planning programmes and activities

**Qualifications**

Ideally an NVQ Level 2 or 3 or equivalent qualification in youth work or a related field focusing on young people

Also desirable would be:

- a qualification in an activity relevant to youth work (such as music, sport, IT/media, etc)
- training in health and safety, first aid, sexual health, and/or child protection
- GCSEs or equivalent qualifications in English and maths

We offer and support training for all of our staff in line with their interests and the needs of the BYP and its members.

As the role is part-time, evening work, you will want to live relatively close to Ashburton.

We are also happy to answer questions or have you drop by to visit during one of sessions.

Note: This job description is intended to provide a general overview of the position. It is not an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, skills, or qualifications required.

**Job Types**: Part-time, Permanent

Pay: £12.00-£13.00 per hour

Expected hours: 8 - 12 per week

**Benefits**:

- Casual dress
- Company pension
- Sick pay

Schedule:

- Monday to Friday

Application question(s):

- Do you live close enough to Ashburton to be able to reliably travel here for our weekday evening sessions?
- What experience or qualifications do you have in youth work (ages 9-19) ?

Work Location: In person

Application deadline: 27/05/2024
Reference ID: YSW May24
