This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated individual to join Barnardo's as an Intervention Worker within the Newport's Family Support Service.

**Who are the Family Support Service?**

The Family Support Service (FSS) is an innovative Edge of Care Service formed through a strategic partnership between Newport Children's Services and Barnardo's. The aim of the FSS is to provide a continuum of support for those families whose children are on the brink of care or where the plan is for a child's rehabilitation home. We work with families focusing on their strengths to build resilience enabling them to make changes to their lives. Interventions are based upon evidence-based practice relevant to the family's needs

What does the job role involve?

An opportunity has arisen for an **Intervention Worker** to join our service. To undertake this role you will need to have direct experience of undertaking family support work with children and parents and delivering evidence based interventions.

**Your initial responsibilities will include**:

- Utilising effective communication skills to engage families, build collaborative relationships and ensure their views are included in the family plan.
- Gathering, analysing, evaluating and summarising information from children, families and other agencies to undertake a holistic assessment of the needs of the families.
- Assisting families to establish goals in an open and participative way.
- Taking responsibility for and give primary consideration to the needs of children with particular regard to child protection procedures and safeguarding.
- Empowering and supporting the family in creating a safe environment.
- Planning and delivering intensive evidence-based interventions with children and families to modify harmful patterns of behaviour, in order to reduce risks and achieve positive outcomes for families.
- Assisting families in identifying strengths and support networks to achieve change.
- Assisting in the identification of appropriate resources and support for the family and advocate on their behalf when appropriate.
- Enabling service users to participate in the evaluation and development of the service.
- Preparing reports as requested including those relating to complex care proceedings and Child Protection Conferences and Children in Care Reviews.
- Establishing, developing and maintaining productive working relationships, through liaison and joint work with other agencies, organisations, groups and individuals within the team's operational remit.
- Recording and collating information to contribute to the monitoring and evaluation of the service.
- Working collaboratively to ensure the seamless transfer of families between intervention phases.

You will have: (All criteria are essential)
- Educated to degree level. Preferably holding a degree in Social Work or other referent professional qualification ie, Teacher, Therapist, Counsellor.
- Experience of working with children, young people and their families preferably in a family support setting.
- Experience of using solution focused, strength-based approaches with children, young people and their families.
- Experience of using therapeutic interventions such as Cognitive behavioural therapy and Dialectical behaviour therapy.
- Experience of working intensively with young people who are in crisis and need of immediate intervention and those reluctant to engage with professionals.
- Knowledge of child development and attachment.
- Knowledge of Safeguarding and procedure.
- Ability to prioritise, organise, self-motivate and work on own initiative.
- Ability to work flexibly including some evenings and weekends.
- Ability to travel throughout Newport in order to meet the requirements of the post.
