An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Respiratory Physiology team at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

As a Clinical Physiologist the postholder is responsible for providing a high quality diagnostic service for the Trust at the new community diagnostic centre based at Willesden. rpret, report, authorise and approve a range of complex, diagnostic highly specialised clinical measurement investigations.

There will also be opportunities available to rotate across the respiratory physiology services within the trust including the Sleep Centre at Charing Cross Hospital.Where the postholder will have an opportunity to analyse sleep studies and take part in the follow-up of patients on CPAP treatment.

They will be required to independently undertake and report on a full range of investigations to include:
Full lung function testing

Reversibility assessment

FENO assessment

6 minute walk

Perform and provide high quality accurate near patient diagnostics for Lung Function and Sleep service:

- Perform standard lung function testing, unsupervised once training is completed, and gaining accurate and clinical valuable measurements
- Standard lung function testing including dynamic lung volumes by spirometry; static lung volumes by whole body plethysmography and nitrogen washout; transfer factor for carbon monoxide by single breath method; assessment of bronchodilator response; field exercise testing.
- Develop and perform the procedures below under supervision and with extra training where required.
- Analysis of respiratory polygraphy; CPAP initiation, education, home monitoring and maintenance of equipment; follow-up patients on CPAP therapy, trouble-shoot problems and alter treatment if required. Participate in rota for conducting patient ‘hook-ups’ for nocturnal full polysomnography studies; skin allergy testing.
- Lead, educate and encourage patients in required test techniques, explaining the need for full co-operation and maximum effort in performing Lung Function tests by demonstrating the same physical effort and enthusiasms.
- Obtain reproducible and clinically meaningful results, acknowledging when to reject poor measurements and technical errors in order to gain the best and most accurate results.
- Distributing and interpreting results for colleagues and other members of staff in all aspects of patient care and respiratory physiology.
- Listening to patient with empathy, patience and tolerance, comforting upset or distressed patients and relatives.
- Communicate effectively with departmental colleagues and other members of staff in all aspects of patient care and respiratory physiology.
- Enter patient details and results onto a database ensuring accuracy. Then reporting the findings of the tests to a basic level.
- Produce written reports on Lung Function measurements and patient co-operation with procedures and technique to give clinicians the greatest understanding of the patients’ physiology.
- To perform any other duties as deemed necessary by the Chief Clinical Physiologist.

To supervise and operate appointments and service schedule
- Assist in the efficient performance and administration of the Lung Function service and efforts to improve these.
- Assist departmental administrator to make patient appointments with mínimal delay, whilst also scheduling and prioritising work
- Prioritisation and organisation of inpatient and outpatient testing in liaison with clinic sessions and other departments
- Perform some general administrative duties such as telephoning patients regarding their tests and answering patients via telephone.

Comply with service quality control and assurance framework
- Ensure correct usage, safety and appropriate maintenance of equipment ensuring compliance with health and safety, trust clinical governance and risk management.
