We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Health and Safety Advisor to join the Salus team at Beckford Street, Hamilton working Monday to Friday, 08:30 - 16:30.

The Senior Health and Safety Advisor will provide highly specialised advice pertaining to the management of health and safety within NHS Lanarkshire and other associated stakeholders. In particular, the post holder will provide advice and assistance to: Directors/Site Directors; General Managers; Heads of Service; Operational Senior Managers; Line Managers and Staff within NHS Lanarkshire and other associated stakeholders.

They will liaise on behalf of NHS Lanarkshire with senior members of the relevant Private Finance Initiative (PFI) consortia within NHS Lanarkshire to ensure the Health, Safety and Welfare of staff, patients and others using the premises. They will also lead and develop a team of Health and Safety Advisors within NHS Lanarkshire.

In addition, the post older will lead on the development, implementation and delivery of health and safety training resources as required as well as promote partnerships to improve the provision and quality of occupational health and safety to NHS Lanarkshire. They will liaise with other professionals to establish Risk Management Techniques as an approach to Health and Safety within NHS Lanarkshire and other associated stakeholders, as required and will also deputise for the Health and Safety Specialist.

The post holder is responsible for providing specialist health and safety advice to the Acute Operating Division, the Community Health Partnerships and the Property and Support Services Department. There are approximately 350 Health and Safety Control Books for Managers in use covering this population as part of the organisational Health and Safety Management system. The Health and Safety Management system requires ongoing, systematic training, servicing, and auditing to ensure that health and safety is being adequately addressed. All of these areas are visited, and inspected, in a predetermined programme at approximately 3-yearly intervals.

NHS Lanarkshire employs a 'behavioural Safety' approach which includes Line Managers taking ownership of the health and safety issues within their areas of responsibility. The post holder is responsible for the development and delivery of suitable and sufficient health and safety training programmes, which enables these Managers to discharge their legal responsibilities in accordance with current legislative requirements. The post holder also supports managers in that regard.

The CHP's and associated areas of the Acute Operating Division have separate health and safety management committees of which the post holder is a key member.

The following knowledge, training and/or experience is required for the job:

- A high degree of technical expertise supported by a vocational qualification (e.g. Construction and / or Engineering related or equivalent) which would be attained over several years.
- A high degree of competence as a Health and Safety Advisor would be attained subsequently in a health care environment prior to taking up this post.

Essential qualifications for the post are:

- Corporate membership of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (CMIOSH)
- A Degree in a relevant Health and Safety discipline.
- A Professional / Technical qualification at HND /HNC level.

In addition, the post holder must be able to demonstrate:

- A proven knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation. A full working knowledge of the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work (etc.) Act 1974 and associated Regulations and Codes of Practice. As well as an understanding of the principles of the “duty of care”.
- A proven knowledge of the activities within the Healthcare environment and an awareness of the inherent health and safety risks presented, and the ability to recognise operational barriers preventing employees adopting good occupational health and safety practices.
- A knowledge and understanding of the appropriate Enforcing Authorities requirements for the Healthcare sector.
- A working knowledge of quality management principles, standards and audit systems
- An awareness of sickness absence in the workplace, including monitoring and management, procedures and rehabilitation.
