The post holder will be responsible for setting, developing and monitoring appropriate and acceptable standards of service, in respect of electrical engineering design and maintenance. The post will manage, in association with the Principal Electrical Engineer,the delivery of the University’s electrical strategic objectives associated with the Long Term Maintenance (LTM) schemes, capital projects and in the context of the University’s carbon reduction agenda

Duties will include:

- Take a custodial role in ensuring all building standards and specifications are fully adhered to on all construction projects regarding the electrical and energy agenda, and provide technical and professional advice on project planning, programming andprocurement strategy as necessary to ensure that: All work is in accordance with legal and statutory requirements timescales, cost targets, appropriate standards of quality; performance and value for money are achieved
- Manage internal staff resources allocated to project work including monitoring of staff productivity to ensure that project costs are minimised; providing technical and professional advice as appropriate and manage external consultants included on designteams formulated for project work
- Establishing and maintaining effective methods of communication and positive working relationships with University stakeholders and external bodies affected by or who are likely to affect project work
- Ensuring that, within all project related activities, a culture of positive health and safety management is promoted and achieved
- Inspect and appraise existing building service installations with regard to condition, functional suitability, space utilisation, compliance with statutory requirements and subsequent preparation of reports and recommendations
- Manage personnel matters relating to staff employed within the Electrical Team including management, recruitment, performance monitoring, training, disciplinary, and welfare
- To develop, manage and maintain Electrical technical specifications
- Manage and control any delegated budgets ensuring expenditure and income are monitored and controlled in accordance with delegated authority and in accordance with the University’s Financial Regulations

Essential skills / qualifications:

- Hold, or working towards, a current full membership of the Chartered Institute of Building Service Engineers Professional (CIBSE) and be, or working towards, a full Chartered Member of the Engineering Council
- Hold appropriate professional and academic qualification to degree level in an engineering related discipline and substantial vocational experience
- An established track record and experience in all aspects of building services electrical engineering
- Experience in setting and monitoring electrical standards
- Experience of producing quality briefing documents to enable consulting engineers to develop design briefs that meet the University’s requirements
- Have relevant experience in carrying out all aspects of a professional electrical building services engineering function in relation to new build and refurbishment works, from project inception to completion
- Demonstrate a good knowledge of working in large institutions with a multi facet complex building portfolio

Must be proficient in:
- The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989
- The Electrical Regulations BS 7671
- Electrical Engineering strategies
- BS5839 and Fire Alarm technologies
- BS5266 and Emergency Lighting technologies

Desirable skills / qualifications:

- Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite
- A formal health and safety qualification, such as NEBOSH
