These posts are in-patient posts based at the Highgate East and West Mental Health Centres (HMHC), Dartmouth Park Hill, London, N19 5NX.

Foreign doctors are very welcome to apply. The Trust has considerable experience in assisting foreign doctors to become accustomed to working in the NHS. We understand that doctors who have not worked in the NHS before may need a brief period of shadowing before taking on the full responsibilities of the post.

**Post 1**: Sunstone Ward is a 17-bed male inpatient long term high dependency rehabilitation ward, which specialises in the treatment of complex patients with difficult to treat psychotic illnesses. The approach is multidisciplinary and holistic, with an emphasis on treatment optimisation. The post holder would get excellent experience in the systematic assessment and treatment of complex psychotic illnesses. Duties would include participating in daily MDT meetings, in clinical reviews (ward rounds), clerking patients, assessing patients’ physical health and involvement in the Trust out of hours on-call rota (approximately 1 in 15). Involvement in the out of hours rota is a mandatory part of the post.

**Post 2**: Split post between Rosewood and Jade Wards, both based at Highgate West. Rosewood is a 17-bed female treatment ward and Jade is a 17 bed male treatment ward. The consultants are Dr Chris Naylor and Dr Neil Sarkar, respectively. Both wards specialise in the treatment of acute severe mental illness such as various types of psychosis, mania, severe depression and some patients with personality disorder in crisis. Duties would include participating in daily MDT meetings, in clinical reviews (ward rounds), clerking patients, assessing patients’ physical health and involvement in the Trust out of hours on-call rota (approximately 1 in 15). Involvement in the out of hours rota is a mandatory part of the post.

Providing a good standard of practice and care

Undertake clinical assessment of patients with mental health problems

You will ensure that all new patients admitted under your team’s care are fully assessed, including an assessment of their physical state, so that a preliminary formulation of their problems is made, at the latest within two working days of their admission. All in-patients should be reassessed as necessary and no less frequently than once per week, so that an update is made before each main ward round. You will attend ward rounds and CPA meetings. The post holder will liaise with primary and secondary care services regarding clients’ physical health issues. They will also work closely with other members of the multidisciplinary team on a wide variety of psychosocial aspects of client care.

You will maintain accurate, legible, contemporaneous and useful clinical records for all patients in whose care you are involved.

Decisions about access to care

Use the results of the clinical assessment to ensure effective patient management

Under the supervision of a clinical supervisor, you will prescribe pharmacological and psychosocial treatments for the patients that you are working with. You will refer them promptly to other professionals as discussed with/ directed by your clinical supervisors.

Treatment in emergencies

Manage emergencies

You may see patients who require urgent psychiatric assessment when you are on-call.

Maintaining good medical practice

You can participate in a weekly half day academic programme or watch the recording.
