Support Worker

**Overview of Seashells**

Seashells are a supported housing project s and funded by Denbighshire Supporting People and Conway Supporting people. Seashells supports four vulnerable males in our supported housing project, who for various reasons are homeless/potentially homeless and/or are unable to cope on their own/or currently are unable to maintain a tenancy. The objective of Seashells is to support these service users and assist where necessary, this could be through teaching life skills such as cooking, cleaning, budgeting, form filling and assisting the service user to find suitable voluntary or college courses that may be of interest. The main goal of our supported housing project is to instil the service user with the necessary life skills in order that they can manage future tenancies with reduced support and equally important is the ability to instil confidence, build self-esteem and promote self-sufficiency in a friendly, homely environment. Seashells if required will assist the service user to find suitable future accommodation.

**Job Criteria**

What working as a Support Worker at Seashells entails:
- **Hours of Work**

You would be required to work on a rota basis, Full time staff members work at 37.5 hours per week; if you work less than this your hours will be adjusted accordingly.

Normally the evening shift commences at 4pm, the sleep-in duty then commences at 12am and completes at 8am. The early shift commences at 8am till 4pm with staff being asked to be flexible around this and adapt these times to suit the needs of the service user on some occasions.

**Qualifications**

QCF level 2, also have 3 or working towards one, Practical experience of supporting people, preferably within a supported housing support setting.

**The Duties Seashells Require in a support worker delivering support to a service user: -**

**1 Accommodation**
- Identifying realistic housing options
- Liaising with local and statutory bodies, that can assist with housing and the cost of this.

**. **Helping the service users to plan for liaising with the landlord i.e. drawing up a list of questions.

**. **Form filling can be undertaken in conjunction with the service user, but staff should always encourage the service user to do this independently where possible.

**2. Advice and Support: -**

**. **Addressing advice and support issues as they arise with service users who have a formal support plan.
- To work through the support plan with the service user during weekly key-work meetings to meet timescales set out and address any barriers to them achieving the goals they have set out for themselves.
- To keep accurate records of Support Meetings and ensure these are discussed and agreed with the service user.
- To provide information on local agencies who may be able to assist them to reach their goals such as.Organisations and agencies that offer services including education, legal, health, training, employment and advice.
- To create weekly planners with service users to incorporate actions from the support plan and other appointments they may have that week in order that this is structured, and support is allocated where necessary.
- To liaise with local agencies and care coordinators who are working with the service user in order that no work is duplicated, and any issues are address by the agency most qualified to do so.
- To support service user to carry out day to day tasks where it has been identified that support is required such as shopping, cooking and cleaning.

**3. Health and Safety: -**

**. **To ensure that the health and safety of the building is maintained by following policies and procedures relating to these and familiarising yourself with work place risk assessments.
- It is the responsibility of all employee’s whilst on shift, to check the building regularly and address health and safety issues swiftly using protective equipment provided where applicable.
- To record health and safety actions carried out and to make the Project coordinator or Manager aware of any serious issues immediately.
- To ensure the property is safely locked up and service users are encouraged to take responsibility for their own health and safety within the property.

**4. Service User Involvement**
- To ensure service users are aware of the complaints policy and how these are recorded and managed.
- To assist service users to participate in consultation exercises both internally and externally and discuss with them the ways in which they feel most comfortable being consulted and involved in the service.
- To hold service user house meetings if these are scheduled to take part on your shift. To record the minutes and provide these for all staff and service users to refer to.
- To discuss and supply information on advocacy for service users and how they can access this.
