Clinical Fellow in Critical Care

Winchester, United Kingdom Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Full time

No previous experience is required for these posts although some exposure to ICU, anaesthetics, acute medicine or medical simulation/education would be advantageous. The posts will provide excellent training and experience for post-foundation doctors planning careers in anaesthetics, medicine, critical care or surgery, or doctors with more significant experience preparing for specialty training.

The ICU is a 9-bed unit, funded for caring for 4 level 2 (“HDU”) and 3 level 3 (“ICU”) patients. However, in keeping with recommended practice, the unit is flexible, in accepting varying ratios of the different levels of care, up to the capacity dictated by nursing numbers. The ICU is recognised for basic training, and can easily demonstrate compliance with recommended activity levels and educational supervision.

The post holder will work a rota that includes weekdays, evenings and weekends, but not currently nights on-call, covering the Intensive Care Unit. Night-time work may be required depending on the need for critical care surge activity in the face of Covid-19 or clinical pressures on Critical care, but if required would be supported by an anaesthetically trained doctor on-site, as well as dedicated Consultant support from home. The working pattern is compliant with the European Working Time Directive. Total direct clinical care [DCC] hours averaged over 6 weeks will not exceed 48 hours a week.

In addition, a number of Supporting Programmed Activities are expected. This includes compulsory attendance (except when on leave or doing DCC) at:

- Mortality & Morbidity (M&M) meetings
- Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meetings
- Medical unit meetings / grand rounds
- Timetabled teaching sessions
