**Job Title**:Head of Outdoor Learning

**Salary**:Band D Point 25 - Point 29 (£26,433 - £30,273) pro rata, FTE

**Reports to**:Deputy Head (Pastoral)

**Prime Function**:
Responsible for promoting and continuously developing a culture of outdoor learning for both staff and pupils.

**Roles and Responsibilities**:
Develop within the School a structured outdoor activities and leadership programme, with appropriate challenge and progression

Work with the Director of Sport to develop opportunities for adventure activities within core and examination Physical Education

Provide and oversee a five year plan for the development of outdoor learning
Coordinate internally and externally the promotion of all outdoor learning achievements via latest news, parent evenings, marketing
Manage the Outdoor Learning budget
Maintain systems for control and checking of school outdoor learning equipment
Put in place risk management and operational plans for adventurous activities
To be available to organise and run field days and expeditions at weekends and during holiday periods

The Duke of Edinburgh Award coordinator - line manage gold, silver and bronze award leaders

Oversee delivery of the Bronze, Silver and Gold, including recruitment, retention and training of participants and volunteers/staff, ensuring high completion rates
Line manage Gold, Silver and Bronze Award Leaders
Manage the recruitment, training and communication with the many volunteers and other staff involved
Liaise with Somerset County Council DofE authority as required
Plan, staff and organise the annual calendar of expeditions, liaising with the Deputy Heads of the Senior School to ensure as few clashes as possible with other activities, events, etc

Activities and 909 Programme
Oversee and administer the Senior Activity Programme
Plan, staff and organise the 909 (Y7-8) Activity Programme
Keep staff and parents informed of activities in which pupils are engaged
Promote continuing Professional Development of staff involved in Activities
Oversee Health and Safety of all activities including Risk Assessments

CCF Contingent Commander
Line manages the school’s SSI
Oversee arrangements for all exercises, camps, courses and training days
Oversee discipline and fitness of school staff whilst undertaking CCF training
Assume the role of Unit Equipment Care Manager with responsibility for overall care and maintenance of MOD issued equipment with particular emphasis on the safe storage of arms and ammunition

Keep staff and parents informed of activities in which cadets are engaged
Promote continuing Professional Development of staff involved in CCF
Promote cadet attendance on MOD sponsored residential courses
Manage the Contingent MOD Grant
Oversee Health and Safety of all CCF activities including Risk Assessment register, ensure the mandatory testing of staff is carried out and ensure qualifications held are in date and current

Represent Wells Cathedral School at the regional cadet conferences and keep the Head apprised of developments within the CCF at least through a termly meeting

Climbing Wall Manager
Inspect and request replacement of all the climbing equipment and maintain a log
Perform maintenance and inspections of the wall as needed and maintain accurate records
Enforce established rules/guidelines to ensure safe and responsible use of the climbing wall/equipment
Update and set new climbing routes when needed
Hold a Mountain Training Association Rock Climbing Instructor or Climbing Wall

Instructor

**Requirements**:
Education/Qualifications
Mountain Leader (Summer) or Hill and Moorland Leader (HML)
Rock Climbing Instructor (RCI) or Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI)
Valid First Aid qualification
Full driving license (preferably with D1)
CCF/ACF/RN Cadet qualifications (M Qual/SAA etc.)

Skills and Abilities
A strong degree of professionalism
An ability to work independently and under one’s own initiative
Good administrative and communication skills
The ability to lead, motivate engage develop staff and pupils alike

Experience
Leading and coordinating outdoor activity provision
Managing a team of staff/volunteers
The provision of technical advice
Managing equipment including items of PPE

Knowledge
Wide ranging knowledge of the outdoor industry and best practice
Detailed understanding of the D of E scheme
