Gypsy Roma Traveller Engagement Worker

Healthwatch Herefordshire are currently recruiting an Engagement Worker to work with the Gypsy Roma Traveller Domiciles across Herefordshire to understand their experiences of health and social care services and to build positive relationships. The role will play a crucial part in understanding and identifying the barriers to accessing health provision with the aim of reducing health inequalities and improving outcomes for these communities.
- **Hours**: Part-time 20 hours a week,
- **Duration**: 12-month fixed term role
- **Salary**: £13,250 per annum (Full time salary equivalent £26,500)
- **Location**: Home based working with travel around the county of Herefordshire required. Expenses within the county provided.
**Benefits**: Employer pension contribution scheme and 25 days leave entitlement (pro rata) plus public holidays.
**Special Conditions**: This role will involve frequent travel in the Herefordshire area; the post holder will require a full driving licence and access to a vehicle or alternatively be able to demonstrate that they can otherwise meet the travel requirements of the role.
**Other requirements**: Willingness to undertake evening and weekend working.
**Security Level**: Standard plus DBS checks
**JOB PURPOSE**
- We intend this role to fully engage with the Gypsy Roma Traveller Domiciles across Herefordshire to understand the barriers they face and work with them to co-produce and co-create solutions, to improve access to and experience of health services, resulting in better outcomes for these communities.
- The information gathered through this role will complement the work of the Community Connectors, offer a richer understanding and will improve the ability to engage with the most the underserved people in the Gypsy Roma Traveller Domiciles.
- To establish and further relationships with residents in the range of Gypsy Roma Traveller Domiciles across Herefordshire.
- To engage with local people, community groups, patients, and service users, from the Gypsy Roma Traveller Domiciles across Herefordshire ensuring wide and diverse involvement and representation across the county within this population, gathering their views.
- The focus of the work with these communities is to inform Cardio Vascular Disease, Chronic respiratory conditions and cancer screening services particularly and facilitate - connection to outreach prevention services, which targets and reaches the Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller Domiciles in Herefordshire.
- To support the recruitment and development of volunteers willing to support engagement activity within the Gypsy, Roma, Traveller Domiciles in Herefordshire.
- This role has been funded by NHS England as part of the core 20 connectors programme for 12 months.
**Main Duties and Responsibilities**:
**1. Engagement**
- Undertake outreach and community engagement activities with the GRT communities in the county, building trust and confidence so people can have their say. Respecting confidentiality always.
- Collate the themes on barriers and solutions to engagement and access to services into a report.
- Contribute to attracting and developing a network of volunteers willing to support engagement activity within the GRT community who may act as an ambassador and connector for a train the trainer model for this work beyond the life of the project.
- Develop and record successes of innovative or specific engagement methodologies that work for the GRT community, e.g. a toolkit or general tips.
**2. Research and Development**
- Utilise research skills and experience to obtain and analyse people's views and experiences, i.e. questionnaire design, survey sampling, analysis of findings, evidence-based report writing.
- Compile succinct evidence-based reports and deliver presentations. Regularly report into the Herefordshire Health Inequalities Personalisation and Prevention group monthly and also to project sponsors NHSE supported by Chief Officer.
**3. Other work-related issues**
- Participate in Healthwatch Team Meetings as required to ensure join up with aligning engagement projects in the county.
- Provide information for contract reporting.
- Develop necessary risk assessments and comply with lone working requirements.
- Act as a champion in ensuring that the work of HWH meets the needs of all communities and is delivered in a way that challenges exclusion, discrimination and prejudice.
- Assist other members of the team as appropriate.
- Ensure understanding and compliance with Health and Safety and Fire Regulations.
- Undertake appropriate learning and development as identified through the supervision, performance appraisal process.
- Undertake any other duties as may be required within the nature of the job.
**4. Outputs and measures for this project**
- Collate a report for the county outlining the barriers to engagement and access for the target groups, the solutions the communities can recommend to improve access and engagement for their communities.
