An exciting opportunity has a risen for a Consultant in Orthogeriatrics based at Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital.

The Orthogeriatric service will be provided at Northumbria Hospital working closely with all members of the multi-disciplinary team involved in the care older people with fragility fractures and other orthopaedic problems, this role is to provide a specialist service to older patients admitted through the trauma pathway.

The team provide high quality care and efficient care across the breadth of trauma and orthopaedic surgery.

The principal trauma service at the Northumbria Hospital has benefited from the Trust’s substantial capital investment and enjoys modern accommodation and state-of-the-art equipment. Staff are enthusiastic, friendly and motivated and work effectively as a team. Relationships with surgeons and other clinicians are excellent. The Directorate is on the Northern Specialist Training rotation (14 SpTrs) and contributes to both undergraduate and post-graduate education.

The dynamic and innovative Trauma and Orthopaedic Team manages inpatient services at The Northumbria Hospital, North Tyneside General Hospital, Wansbeck General Hospital and Hexham General Hospital. The Directorate also provides outpatient services at Alnwick, Berwick, Blyth, and Morpeth, and other GP practices. The range of operations performed reflects a diverse and interesting case mix from urban, industrial and rural communities.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a Consultant in Orthogeriatrics.

The Job Plan will typically include an average of 6 Programmed Activities for Direct Clinical Care duties and 1.5 Programmed Activities for Supporting Professional Activities. A proposed job plan has been outlined in Appendix 1 and will be agreed on commencement of appointment.

There are additional PA’s available for Education and Clinical supervision with 0.25 for first trainee and 0.125 for each subsequent trainee thereafter.

The trust supports requirements for continuing professional development as laid down by the Royal Colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities. Further SPA activity will be agreed at job planning depending upon service needs (if the appointee was to undertake additional responsibilities in activities such as teaching, training or educational supervision, for example).

The post will be flexibly time-tabled to meet the demands of the service and the timing of sessions may change as the service develops.

The post will be based at Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital but the post holders will also be required to work at other sites within the Trust, including the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital for on-call.

We manage three major locality hospitals at North Tyneside, Wansbeck and Hexham, plus a number of smaller community hospitals and clinics from Tynemouth to Berwick on Tweed, in addition to our state-of-the-art Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital, the first of its kind in England. - MRCP Certificate or an equivalent higher qualification
- Accreditation in Geriatric Medicine
- Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required to gain entry to UK CST
- The appointee will be required to maintain full GMC registration and revalidation and should follow the GMC Code of Good Medical Practice
- Experience of teaching undergraduates and postgraduate trainees
- Experience of Quality Improvement activities

Desirable
- Previous experience in orthogeriatrics
- Medical education qualification
- Experience of Audit management
- Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates
- Formal training in clinical supervision/train the trainers
- IT Skills
- Presentation skills
