**How you'll make a difference**:
You will be based from our operating depot in Yate and working in a reactive team who has the responsibility for delivering civil engineering, structures and highway maintenance works across our network, providing a one stop shop for managing the many small jobs that need to be completed effectively to meet the needs of our residents and keeping our places safe.
**What will you be doing**:
- Tasks are varied with changing priorities, so you will be ready to react to tasks on a daily basis and arrive ready for work on time to receive instructions for the days planned works.
- You will set out basic traffic management, replacing damaged ironwork in the highway, prepare and carrying out pothole and patch repairs on live carriageways, lay precast concrete or natural stone kerbs, mixing and laying mortar and concrete. You will also relay flags stones, blocks and cobbles and make repairs and replace road signs, post and street name signs.
- In the role you will operate small mechanical plant used in the maintenance of highways
- You will be required to carry out repairs to drainage, ducts or fixing new street furniture, cut back of dense vegetation obstructing the highway, digging out by hand or machine roadside detritus and clear blocked gullies.
- It is essential that you work in a safe and effective manner to achieve the required quality. You will also assist in urgent situations to make the highway safe for users, clearing debris from road traffic collisions and using appropriate signing, lighting and guarding to protect the public.
- You may be required to be available to be on-call at evenings and at weekends, on a rota basis, as mutually agreed with the StreetCare Operations Manager.
**What we need from you**:
- You must have previous experience in a highway’s maintenance or a construction background and worked with bituminous materials including the repair of potholes to conform with current maintenance standards.
- You will be able to show us that you have the practical skills and knowledge needed to undertake highway or construction maintenance.
- It is essential that you hold a minimum category B licence for manual transmission vehicles with experience in driving vehicles up to 3500kg.
- You will be both reliable and flexible in your approach to work able to respond positively to changes in work priorities and work well in a team.
- You will be able to work outdoors in all environments and weather conditions including severe winter weather.
