We are looking for an experienced Nurse who is committed to delivering excellent patient care and who takes pride in what they do and will work within the cancer nursing team to improve and enhance the colorectal cancer patient journey. As an experienced nurse you will work alongside nursing and medical colleagues in surgery and oncology to facilitate the best experience and care for individuals diagnosed with colorectal cancer.

A background in colorectal nursing/ Cancer / Oncology or palliative care would be advantageous to the applicant. Excellent communication skills are essential, an ability to prioritise workload, whilst working as part of a team is also essential.

The clinical nurse specialist functions within a field of practice that focuses on the needs of the patient and encompasses interaction with others in delivering nursing, health and social care.

The CNS promotes excellence in nursing practice through the integration of expert clinical practice, education, consultancy, acting as a resource and commitment to nursing research.

The post holder will contribute to the on-going role in the development of the service for patients with Colorectal cancer. This will include developing protocols; setting up; and running a nurse led clinics (face to face/Virtual/telephone) for follow up care which will include advanced assessment skills. The post holder will be the key professional involved in supporting and counselling a caseload of patients and their families through the entire cancer journey and specifically around the time of the cancer diagnosis and surgery and following cancer specific treatments. The post holder will also participate in the education of all disciplines of staff working with this patient group and act as an expert resource to other professionals involved in the care of these patients. The post holder will work to ensure that cancer specific guidelines are adhered to and Department of Health standards are maintained.

Expert Clinical Practice/Leadership
1. To provide expert nursing advice to patients with colorectal malignancies and their families throughout the course of their illness from diagnosis, assessing their needs and providing information as required.
2. To demonstrate specialist skills and knowledge through expert nursing practice.
3. To liaise with all relevant members of the multidisciplinary team in the care and support of individual patients including GPs.
4. To maintain a high profile in the clinical area, acting as a role model for other health care professionals
5. To facilitate individualised patient care based upon the principles of evidence based practice.
6. To act as a liaison nurse between inpatient, outpatient and home care, referring on to community support agencies when required.
7. To hold a nurse led clinic including the development of written protocols based on national standards, triaging or following up all colorectal cancer patients, arranging colonoscopy and tests, reviewing results, diagnosing, prescribing appropriate medication and referring back to a medical team as appropriate.
8. Supporting patients with body image and sexuality concerns in relation to colostomies, utilising other agencies and specialists as appropriate.
9. To offer advice and support on pain and symptom control liaising with the Specialist palliative care team and make appropriate referrals to the chronic pain service.
10. To assess individual patients’ psychosocial and spiritual needs and refer
